Chapter 14: Brave

My ears were bleeding from what I just heard. She killed him? Did I hear what she said correctly? If I were Sky, I would hate her too but then again there must be a reason why. She didn't look like she was a psychopath. She didn't do it without a reason, right? Turmoil surfed in the pit of my stomach while the rest of my body went numb.
"You killed him?" I said but the words could barely come out.

She nodded her head and said, "Well that's what Skylyn thinks."

Now, I was really confused. What does she mean by 'what Sky thinks'? So she didn't really kill him? I sure my face morphed into a way that anyone could read my thoughts. I still probed to ask, "Why did you kill him?"

She looked at me with shaky eyes. Looking at her reminded me of Hanna when she did to Adam. The facial expression of deep regret.

"I did it to protect Skylyn," she finally let out of her chest.

"To protect her?" I questioned.

"I guess I should explain the whole story," she said with a half smile.

She began explaining the whole situation that happened before.

School was over and summer had begun. Kids were playing outside with each other, friends and neighbors; something you would only see on television. Your worst enemies were flying all over the place sucking out your blood like hungry vampires and leaving swollen bumps on your body-- aka mosquitos. During this time, Sky was eight. A happy, innocent eight year old.

The word 'innocent' was really unrealistic. Let's be real, who is innocent nowadays. Babies aren't even innocent.

Sky was playing outside with her best friend, Hanna. Remember when I told you that they knew each other before they met me.

While the two were playing, Erika and Mark, Sky's father, were inside the house. Erika and Mark weren't the happiest married couple. Mark would always abuse and threaten Erika that he will take Sky away from her. That's when they are alone. When Sky is ever around he would always act like the best father and husband in the world. It was all an act.

Erika would always put on a fake smile, to hide everything because Sky seemed not to notice anything while she was in her own little world. As long as Sky was happy, Erika thought, that's all that mattered. Even if that meant, her world was absolute hell. Sky's happy face was her motivation and hope for things to be better. One day, he will stop, she thought.

One day on a hot July day, Erika and Mark were arguing about Sky while Sky was at her aunt's house during that time. Mark wanted to take Sky away from her . It wasn't just him saying it but he meant it. He said that he would take Sky and sell her, unleashing the real demon he really is.

Their verbal fight began to become a physical fight. After a bushed a lip, a bleeding nose, and a few bruises, Erika was down to the floor like how it always ended. She was beaten and he was getting his way. When Mark was close to the door with his belongings packed, Erika tried to pull him away from the door but was pushed down again.
