Hiccup frowned as the government agents watched him. The DreamWorkers, an international version of the C.I.A., had caught him and brought him in for questioning. The reason?
Hiccup was a mutant. A freak of nature. An affront to normality. A mistake. A monster. He'd been called that and more and he'd hardened against the words, knowing they'd never cease.
It wasn't like he was dangerous. He had his powers under control. He'd trained himself. He'd worked to help people. But no matter how hard he tried, all people saw when they looked at him was a walking inferno, a disaster waiting to happen. A public menace. Hiccup felt his hands heating up, felt the wood of the table he sat at begin to smoke around his fingers, felt the spark brewing, waiting to be released.
He took a breath and the flame was snuffed out. He let out an airy chuckle. Wasn't that what they brought him there for? To take him out? Make sure the public was safe? Hiccup felt the whole scenario was stupid. If they wanted to kill him, they could've shot him in the car on the way to the facilities. Or just killed him on his way home. Sneak into his house and whack him as soon as he locked the door. No, that would've been too easy. They had him there for a reason. A purpose. Something...
The door to the interrogation room (or waiting room as they called it) opened, and a woman in a sit walked in. Her purple contacts (could those be her real eyes?) and green, yellow and pink hair made her look no less professional. Hiccup get his back straighten and the woman smiled. "Hello Hiccup. I'm Toothiana. But you can call me Tooth." "Tooth?" Hiccup get a chuckle escape before he quickly mumbled an apology. "It's fine. It's an alias. I work for the government after all."
"Yeah, I guessed that. But can I ask a question?" Tooth nodded. "Absolutely. Are you thirsty? Hungry? I can have someone bring us something." Hiccup frowned but maintained his cool. "No thanks." He politely declined. "But, back to my question, why am I here?" Tooth seemed confused, as if the answer was obvious to both.
"You have been selected as part of an initiative for the betterment of mankind. The Guardians Initiative. Men and women with certain... abilities such as you have, are being recruited to work for the government in protecting the better interests of mankind." Tooth smiled as if she'd offered Hiccup a million dollars but he was less than enthusiastic.
"So I'm gonna be some sort of hero? Is that it? The government's gonna give me an alias and a new identity and a suit and expect me to work for them because of what I am?" "No. It's not like that." Tooth interjected. "Then what is it like? From what I'm hearing it sounds like you're all using me and others like me and throwing us away when you don't need us!" Hiccup cursed as he felt his hands catch, both covered in flames. He looked to Tooth, surprised to see she looked unafraid of his powers. "I figured this would happen. I told Moon he needed a more humane approach."
"Moon?" "My boss, the leader of the DreamWorkers." Tooth shortly explained before her face lit up with a knowing smile. "Hiccup, would you like to meet the team." "How many are there?" "In all, 5, not counting you should you join." Hiccup conceded, curiosity taking over. "Maybe one. Not all of them though, I just want to hear someone who understands." Tooth nodded. "I'll send them in." She turned to the door before turning back. "Hiccup, for what it's worth, I don't think of you as just another government case to be filed." Hiccup nodded and sat down, mind racing with thoughts.
"Someone like me. Someone who knows what it's like." Hiccup mumbled. Was it possible? There were others born different? With powers they couldn't explain? Were they outcasts too? Were they considered dangerous? Hiccup felt his breath catch as the door opened and the fellow mutant walked in.
He didn't know what he'd been expecting in the few short minutes it took for the person to arrive, but the girl before him wasn't it. She couldn't have been over 21, so just below Hiccup if she was. Her platinum blonde hair was in an intricate braid and her eyes were closed like she was tired. She had a tray in her hands, holding a plate loaded with food and a cup of coffee. She sat down and her eyes opened slightly, Hiccup couldn't believe the sparking shade of blue that they were.
"Sorry, I was kinda just called in and I just woke up." Hiccup looked over and noticed the blue robe and t-shirt and sweatpants underneath it. "It's okay. And is this all for me?" The woman nodded. "Yeah, they didn't know what you wanted and everyone kinda went off when they discovered it was for a potential teammate. I'm Elsa, by the way." She extended her hand, which was covered by a pale blue glove. "Hiccup." Hiccup offered; taking the hand gingerly given he'd been blazing only minutes before.
Elsa smirked, before blushing slightly. "Would you mind?" She pointed a finger at the coffee. "No, all yours." Elsa smiled, allowing Hiccup to see her perfect teeth. "Thanks, I'm nothing without my coffee in the morning." She peeled the lid. "Damn, why did it cool down?" She seemed less confused and more let down, like she's failed at something. "I can... um, heat that up." Elsa looked up, "Really?" "Yeah, can I?" Elsa handed the cup over and Hiccup mustered the lowest flame he could and slowly heated the coffee. He looked at Elsa, surprised to see no fear in her eyes, if anything, there was admiration.
"Aren't you gonna freak out?" He asked. Elsa seemed unafraid, sipping the now warm coffee. "Why would I? I mean, the control you have, it's incredible. I wish I could control my powers like that." She quickly stopped, clapping her hand over her mouth like she's revealed some secret. Hiccup couldn't help the question. "What are your powers?"
He hoped Elsa wouldn't get upset or that he hadn't struck some nerve. He breathed a sigh of relief when she nodded, slowly removing her glove. With a deep breath, a soft flurry of snowflakes erupted from her fingertips. Hiccup was surprised to see it was true, that there was someone who could do what he did. Elsa quickly replaced her glove. "There, you've seen it." She said, her voice shaky. "That was incredible." Hiccup offered.
"No it wasn't. I can't control my powers too well. I'm a loose cannon. That was the first time in weeks I was actually able to summon my powers and not have a release of energy." "Bundling all that up can't be good for you. Physically or emotionally." Elsa frowned. "You don't know me. You don't know what I've been through." Hiccup frowned.
"But I do. It took me years to find some control of my powers. Whenever I got emotional, they'd erupt and I hurt someone. When my dad died, I nearly destroyed my town. Every place I've been, someone's upset me or done something and I've always gone too far and had to be relocated. I only just recently got off the governments radar and made some sort of life for myself. Then I get dragged in here and I find out there are others like me. Others who can understand what I've been through. Like you." Hiccup looked down, noticing his hands were completely ablaze. He was about to will them out when a soft voice stopped him. "No."
Elsa slowly turned, her gloves off and on the floor. "I-I want to try something. Do you burn whatever you touch?" "I used to. Before I trained myself." Elsa nodded, her hand spilling out a trickle of snowflakes. Hiccup knew what was coming, he lifted his hand and felt hers join his. For the first time in his life, he felt cold. It was like a rush of relief, of peace and calm.
Elsa couldn't believe the warm feeling that spread through her, thawing her inside and out as she held on to Hiccup. She looked up into his eyes, surprised to see flecks of orange among the green. Like fire, she mused. Both their hands were linked now. Hers at subzero temperature, his at scorching high. But neither felt anything other than a sense of complete peace.
Elsa felt her cheeks heat up as Hiccup smiled. "I think I might just join the Guardians." "Good, but there's one condition." "What?" Hiccup asked. "Teach me." Hiccup smiled. "You wanna know the real trick?" Elsa nodded. "Take all the guilt, the sadness, any negativity you hold towards your power, and let it go." Elsa mulled over that thought as Tooth came in to congratulate Hiccup on his choice.
"Let it go"
