Elsa sighed as she laid in the hospital bed. Her face was red, her voice was hoarse from screaming and she was sure she'd crushed her father's hand in the process, but she had to love the end result. The sleeping baby in her arms.
The seventeen year-old smiled as she stroked the soft hairs of her son's head. White as snow, just like her grandfathers. Elsa had thought the gene had died with him, but apparently she carried it and gave it to her son. "Jackson Matthew Arendale." Elsa tested the name on her tongue, despite having chosen it months before. "My little Jack. You gave me quite the surprise, but I wouldn't give you up for the world."
Her mind wandered to a distant memory and she frowned. "I'm sorry I couldn't have brought you into a world where you had a loving father attending your birth. I'm sorry if things will be hard for us. But I promise you, Jack, that no matter what, you'll always be my son and I'll never stop loving you. No one will ever take your place in my heart, remember that. And that you are loved by so many people. Your grandparents and auntie were given quite a stir at the news of your arrival, but they'll help us get by. We're a family and families stick together."
Her small moment with her son was interrupted by a light knock on the door. "Anna, Jack's tired so I doubt he'll want to be moved anytime soon." Elsa sighed, kneeing her sister was already in love with her nephew, but she was surprised by what actually met her. A boy, a year older than her, tall and lanky with shaggy brown hair. His feet shifted awkwardly in the doorway, half in the room and half out. He met her eyes and raised a hand in a slight wave. "Hey Elsa, long time no see."
Elsa was shocked to say the least. Hayden "Hiccup" Haddock, one of her old friends. "Old" being the key term given she abandoned him along with Riley and Merida for the popular crowd years before and had regretted it ever since. She's heard Hiccup had gotten into a bad crowd, dressed in darker clothes and generally partook of activities that the boy she'd known would've avoided. She'd seen him around school, with his dark clothes and whole "bad boy" exterior. He even had tattoos given he was 18, Elsa could see them traveling up and down his arms.
"Come in." Elsa offered, softly patting the chair next to the bed. Hiccup walked in, hands fumbling behind his back before pulling them out. In them was a blue blanket and a snowman plushie. "I-Um, brought this for him." Elsa took the gift, handing it to Jack who, even in sleep, seemed to take it eagerly. "How'd you know what was going on?" "Between school and our moms being old friends, I didn't have a chance of not hearing." His slight smirk disappeared and Elsa saw some anger in his eyes. "I'm sorry about you know who."
Elsa grimaced at the mention of her former boyfriend. "Hans isn't worth my concern anymore." Hiccup frowned, hand landing on Elsa's. "Elsa, he's angry. He wants revenge on you. He may have signed away his parental rights and there's nothing he can do to reverse that but I know him. He's dangerous." Elsa frowned. "Since when are you friends with him? All he's ever done is bully you."
Hiccup grimaced. "He cut me a deal, he'd stop tormenting me if I kept up my bargain." "Bargain?" "Doing what he said. Homework. Being his spy. Having to do all sorts of idiotic stuff to earn his trust." Elsa frowned. "You could've reported him. You could've stood up-" "Not to him, Elsa. Hans has a network of people under his thumb. He's got this power over people. He's got everyone under his control except Riley, Merida and a few others."
Elsa frowned, knowing Hiccup regretted ever dealing with Hans. Really, he was in the same boat as her. "Hiccup, there is nothing Hans can really do to control you. He's a ruler based off of fear and if someone said 'no' to him, if everyone just said 'no', he'd be powerless." Hiccup nodded, absorbing the information. "I can't believe I let him control me like some sort of puppet."
"Hiccup, what happened to you? All the parties and the alcohol... it isn't you." Hiccup's head fell. "I know that. I hate it. It's just... Hans made it sound like it was worth it." "Hans is just a manipulative jerk who only bends others for personal gain. What on Earth could he have said to convince you?" Hiccups cheeks reddened. "I-I thought if I hung out with them, that you'd be interested in me again."
Elsa frowned. "Oh Hiccup, I hated the people I was with. All those stuck up girls. I miss hanging out with Riley and Merida. I miss hanging out with you. I just... It felt like they were the only people I had left. They pulled me in and I burned all the bridges I had." Hiccup grabbed her hand. "No you didn't. Riley and Merida still care about you. They know you just lost sight of what was important. And they really wanted to come meet Jack."
Elsa smiled at the mention of her son, gently rocking the sleeping baby. "I'm sure he'd love to meet them. I-I know I can do this. He's my son and I'm going to do everything in my power to give him a good life." Hiccup nodded. "For what it's worth, I think Hans is an idiot for not realizing how good he could've had it with you and Jack." "Yeah, I'm pretty sure every guy on campus will want to date me knowing I'm a single mom now." "Well, at least there's one guy." Hiccup offered before blushing. "I-I mean, since we're friends and neighbors and I can stop by and lend a hand with Jack if you ever need help." Elsa looked up, surprised to see Hiccups cheeks were red, she felt her own hear up as she squeezed his hand. "That sounds wonderful."
Their conversation seemed like it was loud enough to wake the infant between them, who lazily opened his cerulean blue eyes. A pair of crystal blue and emerald eyes looked back at him. "C-Can I?" Hiccup asked. Elsa nodded, gingerly handing the baby to Hiccup. The nerd-turned-punk-turned nerd again smiled and gently bounced the baby. "Hey Jack. I'm Hiccup, and I'm helping your mom raise you. Now is the chance to back out." He half-joked, only for Jack to gurgle and reach out to him. Hiccup took the small hand and smiled. "In all seriousness, know that I'm here for you Jack. I'm here for both of you." The baby gurgled and smiled before beginning to doze. Elsa joined him and Hiccup got ready to leave. "Hiccup?" Elsa asked, stopping him. "Could you... maybe... stay with me? With us?" "Of course Elsa." Hiccup sat back down and smiled at the sleeping girl and baby.
Anna hurried to the hospital room. It was just like her to forget her jacket. And Kristoff wanted to go ice skating and Mom and Dad said yes. The 13 year old was bursting with joy as she entered the hospital room and stopped. Elsa was asleep, Jack joining her on her chest. But beside both of them was Hiccup, softly smiling and playing on his phone, his eyes occasionally wandering to Elsa and Jack. Anna flashed a knowing smile and quickly snapped a pic on her phone. Hiccup blushed slightly.
"You gonna tell your parents?" "Do you have my jacket?" Hiccup held up the green winter coat and Anna smiled. "I suppose I can keep this between us. And for the record, you don't have to worry, you'll be staying around for a while." "What does that mean?" "I read Elsa's diary. You're pretty much stuck with them. With our family." "Wouldn't have it any other way." Anna smirked and turned, closing the door, knowing her sister and nephew were in good hands.
