I pull out my phone to check the time, the light making me squint my eyes. It's 11:57. I sit up, Callista doesn't wake this time. I pull on my shoes, slowly tying them and standing up. A few others awake and begin gravitating towards the door; they must be in on the prank. I stand up and carefully step over several sleeping bags until I reach the door with the group of people. I get a few confused looks, but the Ares kids arrive before anyone can truly judge me. Wendy immediately picks me out, her eyes widening and a grin spreading across her pale features.
"Elsa!" She rushes forward and envelops me in a hug. This causes me to get more looks, but this time instead of confused they're intimidated. Apparently being friends with Wendy gives you immunity from being picked on. When Wendy releases me, I notice a black large jar in her hands.
"What's that?" I question.
"Tarantulas. All the way from South America," She notices my stunned looks and adds, "I have connections."
I am in far too deep to admit I have a small fear of spiders myself, but Wendy says as long as I don't mishandle them they won't bite. The small group of Hermes and Ares kids, including one unclaimed kid who happens to be myself, make our way to the Athena cabin. It's interior is decorated with dozens of gold and bronze owls. I hear a popping noise and look down to see Wendy has already opened the jar. Her grin is wild and full of mischief. It takes a Hermes kid around two seconds to pick the lock and we move inside the cabin.
Wendy keeps one hand on my wrist and one hand holding the jar. She walks slowly and glances over each sleeping face as if she's looking for something in particular. We come across a girl with long dark hair and a strong jawline. I hear Wendy suck in a gasp and give me a look as she lets go of my wrist to stick her hand inside the jar. As she fishes around for the hairy spider, I continue to stare at the girl in the bed. She looks familiar. She was the one sitting with Rowan! Her name was Savannah, I think.Wendy pulls out a spider the size of a small cantaloupe. Carefully, she leans down and places it on the girl's head. The spider doesn't move, but it's legs nestle into her hair. I think we're about to move out and get the hell out of here when Wendy reaches into the jar again and pulls out a pair of two much smaller spiders, both being the size of a kiwi. I need to stop using fruit as a metric to measure spider size. She places one kiwi spider on Savannah's chest, then directly on her closed mouth. I tighten my gut and pray to the gods that the girl doesn't scream and accidentally eat Mr. Kiwi Spider. Wendy places the jar on the floor and grabs my wrist with one hand, leading me the back of the cabin where there's another exit door. I extend my hand forward to open it and Wendy seats it away.
"No!" She hissed out under her breath. "I want to see. Just wait."
As if on cue, the bright lights flicker on and a Hermes kid near the front presses down for a second on a air horn. Everyone single person jolt awake, but I'm still looking at Savannah.
She immediately awakes once the horn sounds. I hope she sits up. But instead, she groggily reaches her arm up to rub her temple. I chew furiously at my bottom lip as her fingers are half a inch away from cantaloupe spider. Her lips twitch. She must feel the fuzziness of the spider. She slowly reaches up her hand and brushes lazily as her mouth, causing the spider to climb onto her hand. She sees it and her eyes bulge, Savannah lets out a ear piercing scream as she flings the spider across the room. Poor guy. This new action causes the kiwi spider on her chest to begin climb up her neck. She continues and swats wildly at her neck, when her hand falls back to the bed what is left on her neck is a mess of gooey, hairy spider guts. She sits up as more Athena kids around her scream. I glance to Wendy who is laughing mantically. I reach for the door again, desperate to leave this awful situation, but Wendy holds me in place.
"The fun is just starting, c'mon!" She says into my ear.
I gulp and continue watching the horror scene.
Savannah finally sits up, which was a very bad move. She's still screaming and as she sits up, cantaloupe spider tumbles down her head and tangles itself in her hair. The girl next to her, notices it and begins screaming as well. She has a ginger head of hair and brown eyes.
"Jana! Get it out!" Savannah screeches, I'm barely able to make out the words. I don't know if it's due to Wendy's loud laughing, the loud screaming of the Athena kids, or the fact Sav sounded like a wild coyote. Probably all three.
Jana looks around frantically before leaning over her bed and reaching her arms under, pulling an closed umbrella. Sav widens her eyes at the sight of it and is beginning to open her mouth, to reject I hope, but Jana wildly swings the umbrella into the back of Sav's head and continues hitting her until the cantaloupe spider is identical to the kiwi spider mush on Sav's neck. Sav is limp. I'm guessing she's passed out. I'm about to step in when Wendy pulls me back again, shaking her head as she finally opens the door and yanks me out. I breath several long breaths of relief before I'm pulled to the window.
"I lied, this is the best part."
I grit my teeth and before I have the chance to ask her 1. why did we go outside if it's not over and 2. what is the best part?
