two: just frosty
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The smell of bacon and pancakes arouse me from my deep sleep. I stretch my arms and legs before opening my eyes. From my lips escapes a yawn as I open my eyes and sit up. I quickly shut my eyes as I am rudely greeted with the bright sun streaming through my window.
Blakley, why did you have to forget to shut the curtains?
My eyes slowly but surely adjust to the light allowing me to see clearly. I glance out the window to find that it had stopped snowing at some point during the night. A shiver runs up my spine as my arms are exposed to the crisp air. Note to self: turn on the heater before going to bed. Or at least wear a long sleeve shirt.
I swing my legs over the side of my bed and take long strides toward my duffle. I happily grab my senior sweatshirt from my bag and quickly pull it over my head. Ah, warmth.
I get another whiff of bacon and pancakes which lures me downstairs to the kitchen. When I arrive at the kitchen, I find my mother cooking while my dad reads a newspaper in the recliner in the living room and Xavier groggily sitting on a barstool. I slide onto the stool next to Xavier's.
"Good morning, Blakley," my mother greets as she places a plate of pancakes and bacon in front of Xavier. And just like that he wakes up from his groggy state of mind to chow down on his breakfast. "Two pancakes?" My mother asks me.
"Yes, please," I answer nearly drooling from the smell. I absolutely love bacon and pancakes. You could say it's my second favorite breakfast. My first being bacon, eggs, and grits along with a fresh cooked biscuit.
"Andrew," my mother calls as she places the plate of deliciousness in front of me. "Breakfast is ready."
The sound of my father closing the newspaper sounds behind me. "Thank you, dear," he takes a seat on the other side of Xavier. He places his coffee down on the counter before digging into his pancakes. Which reminds me...
I pour some syrup into the side of my plate before I dig in. I tear a piece off of my pancake with my hands and dip it into the sugary liquid. As I eat my piece of pancake, Samuel groggily walks into the kitchen. Xavier jumps out of his seat and runs to him giving him the biggest hug. Aw.
"Sammy!" Xavier exclaims.
"Hey, Xavier," Sam replies half asleep. I stifle my laughter from the sight. Give it another thirty minutes or so and Sam will be awake and as energetic as Xavier.
Xavier returns to his seat and Sam slides into the seat next to me.
"Hey, sis," he ruffles my already messy bed-headed hair. "Missed your big bro?"
"Not as much as you missed me," I reply with a mouth full of bacon. My manners are wonderful, I know, but it's morning and I'm starving.
"So attractive, Blake," he chuckles grabbing his plate of pancakes. Mom joins us across the island but doesn't take a seat.
"Mom, take my seat. I'll stand." I offer my seat as my brothers are too into their food to offer.
"No, darling, you stay right there. I'm perfectly fine standing." My mother shoots me a warm smile before eating her food.
