“Are you sure there’s nothing between you guys?” Abdullah asked Sheath. Sheath gave a nod and said, “I was just passing by her when she fainted… that’s why I helped her back then. Why? You interested in her?” Sheath asked. Without hesitation Abdullah said, “Nope. But I know a certain someone is.” Sheath looked at Abdullah and blankly asked, “Who?” Abdullah laughed and said, “It’s nothing. You’ll find out later on.” Sheath shrugged “Whatever.” Abdullah looked at Sheath and grinned, “Sheath, you’re as slow as a snail, aren’t you?” Sheath was already looking at Conner who was talking to Samaar. He simply stared at Samaar and tilted his head wondering how his life got so complicated and messed up with the topic of marriage.
Samaar's POV
Nope. I won't do it. Please don't put us in the same group. Mr. McKenzie, you're awesome and everything but if you put me with him, you'll be my worst teacher ever...
And so... "Samaar, Aasiya, Sheath and Abdullah. You guys are in the same group as well." ... I shall go and fake my death. I was unconsciously scowling. Aasiyah poked me and I turned to her. She held up a mirror towards me and told me to fix my face. I did... what was I supposed to do? The happy dance? But on the other hand, the groups shouldn't be permanent right? "And the groups will be the same throughout the whole semester."
Wow.. My love for chemistry just grew... sarcasm never fails me.
We were all sitting down in our seats. The bell rang a couple of minutes ago. The class was quiet and my stomach was already growling. For some reason I had no breakfast this morning and neither did I have any dinner last night.
"It's not your first time doing a lab with a group, so get together and discuss the material being handed out. But first is first, I'll explain everything you need to know about it." Mr. McKenzie went on and on about the work. It was a difficult task listening to an old man trying to make things simplified for a new generation. Later on we got into our groups and Sheath was actually the one doing a lot of work. I, on the other hand, was feeling a little insecure so I kept beside Aasiya all the way through.
Okay Samaar! Now's not the time to be a shy, good for nothing girl. You have to be strong and kick butt! ......Never mind. I give up already. I'm too lazy for it right now... Yesterday night, Aakifah kept me up the whole night because of her one and only problem: physics! Her mood swings were like the rainbow. She was happy at once for getting a step through, then depressed the next for not getting the answer at the end.... then angry at me for being her little, small sister who knows nothing about grade twelve physics. I mean, come on! Do I look like a genius? I'm only managing to get an average of seventy-five percentages in all my grade eleven classes.
"The beakers?" I asked. Aasiya nodded and I said I'd go get them. There were a lot of guys hurdled near the beaker cabinet. I had a straight face on with my right fist clenched. I'm still trying to understand why violence is forbidden in school grounds. The guys smelled like sweat and clone. Another reason to hate guys! Before I knew it Abdullah was standing next to me.
"I'll get the beakers. You can go back." He said. I couldn't really clearly hear him so I just nodded and turned to leave. Then he leaned in and whispered something, "Your eyes are as red as blood." I turned to him and sarcastically said, "Don't worry.... I had LOADS of sleep." Then turned around to go back to the lab desk.
Not only was I worrying about my stomach and my sleep, I was also worrying about Yusra and Conner. Yusra told me she would think of something to get rid of the awkwardness between her an Conner. Obviously me and Conner were doing fine with each other. But once Conner would spot Yusra in the hallway, he’d turn around and leave without saying a thing. Then Yusra would come up to me and tell me to stop talking to myself. And each and every time I would ask myself: Wasn’t I just talking to Conner?? Where the hell did that idiot go??
When I got home, I found Auntie and my mom looking at a photo album. They told me to come and look with them. Sheath entered the house a few seconds later. I sat down with my mom and looked up to see Sheath standing over us. He turned pale.
“Mom, what are you showing Auntie?” He asked his own mother.
“Hmm?? Ah! Memories! I was just about to show them how cute you looked as a kid!” Sheath quickly took the picture album, took it to the table and started taking out a billion pictures. Then he handed the family album back to his mom.
“Here.” He said. “I just took out the embarrassing pictures. That’s all.” His mom quickly searched through it.
“Sheath give me all those pictures right now.’ Auntie turned serious.
“Nope!” Sheath replied as he ran up to his room and shut the door.
“Why was he so embarrassed? They were just his cute baby pictures!” My mom said, sadly.
Auntie laughed. “Don’t worry! He left one here by accident.” Auntie took out Sheath’s last picture from behind his older sister’s picture. But… that wasn’t Sheath. It was a girl… a cute one.
“Uhm… Auntie… I think you’ve got the wrong picture… It’s a girl.” I said, examining it. She looked like she was about four years old.
“No Samaar it's Sheath.” Auntie said holding up the picture closer to me. I looked at it even closer and saw that the little girl did resemble Sheath a little. Then I started laughing. “His older sister, Jameelah really wanted a little sister. Because Subhee and Yaqub were guys, she was already tired of brothers. She wanted a sister to play with. And she was at least ten years older than Sheath, so she got your uncle to dress Sheath up as a girl once in a while.”
“Auntie, if I were him I would have already burnt them all.” I said.
“He would have if he knew earlier. We made extra copies! So there’s no use! I can replace them all the time. Here you could take this picture. If he ever threatens you or tries pushing you to do things for him then you show him whose boss!” I laughed at that and took the picture.
After taking the picture I put it in my wallet and grinned. Who knows? I could use it to my advantage.
I went to school the next day, fearing Yusra’s answer. Tomorrow was the day Yusra would sort stuff out with Conner. Would she accept him or refuse him?
There are three things I definitely know about my best friend:
a) She won’t ever date a guy.
b) She won’t ever marry a non-Muslim, and
c) She definitely won’t admit her feelings of ever liking Conner.
But in the end, I’m still worried.
