Just a heads up, this chapter is short. (ok, I will admit, my chapters might stay short throughout the story, but on the flip side, that means I'll be updating faster, right?)

Barry's POV

"Barry! You've got to get them out of there quickly! I need to know just how fast you can run."

It was Dr. Wells who said this, urgency present in his voice.

"I know, I know, I'm trying, but this isn't just a test run! People's lives are at stake here!" I replied angrily as I rushed in and out of the burning building, getting one person after the other to safety.

The fire department wouldn't get to the scene in time; the building was near collapsing.

Just then, I heard a faint cry coming from the top of the structure. The words were almost drown out by the roaring fires.

"Hel...e, plea...!"

Looking up, I saw a little girl standing on the roof, waving her arms frantically. "...meone! I nee...elp!" The flames surrounded her, creeping closer by the second.

"Barry! Run! The stability of the building has been compromised."

This time it was Caitlin who spoke.

It took me less than a second to run up the side of the building. The little girl was screaming as I grabbed her and bolted, searching the building for anyone else. Satisfied that everyone was accounted for, I rushed towards the first floor. I could barely see, the smoke burning my eyes and throat as I burst out from the front door.

A second later, the third floor collapsed, bringing the rest of the building thundering down with it. A loud boom resounded throughout the area as the building's remnants came crashing down. The heat was almost unbearable as a huge wave of flames rose up into the air, smoking rising into the night sky in a dark cloud.

A woman came running towards us, holding her arms out with tears streaming down her face. "Tessa! My baby!" The girl turned in the direction of the voice and the biggest grin I've ever seen appeared on her face. "Mommy!" I watched briefly as they embraced, remembering how I used to do that with my mom when she got home from work. I shook those thoughts away, not wanting to think about the fact that she was dead.

"Was that everyone?" Dr. Wells asked through the earpiece.

"I think so, yeah," I replied, breathing heavily, my eyes still roaming.

It was then that I saw her. There had been another girl on the roof, now lying unconscious in the rubble. I cursed myself for not checking it thoroughly enough. But I'd gone through everything, hadn't I?

"Hang on, there's one more." I raced across the broken chunks of cement, scooping her up bridal style as I went.

Almost instantly, I felt a sharp pain in my chest and a soft blue light eminated from under the girl's eyelids. I stumbled a bit, caught by surprise. What was happening? The pointed feeling swiftly moved around my entire body, ending with my brain as if it was searching me, then it was gone, the glow fading from her eyes.

Being a good two blocks from the caved in structure, I stopped to study her face.

"Barry, is everything ok?" Caitlin asked.

She looked to be in her late teens, maybe early twenties even. The girl's light pink dress was ripped and charred, her hands and face were covered in soot, cuts and bruises. Burning welts and blisters covered her arms and legs. Her face was thin and fragile looking, but striking even with the smudges. A layer of frizzy red hair hung from her scalp, and her breathing was shallow and slow.

I could've sworn there'd been no one else up on that building. How could I have missed her?

"Barry? What's wrong?"

I was snapped out of my thoughts by Caitlin's persistent voice. For a moment, I couldn't find the words.

"I found a girl," was all that came out.

"What do you mean, you found a girl?!" Cisco's previous silence was blown to bits.

"Oh there you are, Cisco! Glad you could join us. I'll explain everything on the way back."

And with that, I took off into the night towards S.T.A.R. Labs, not seeing the cloaked figure standing in the shadows just across the street...

A/N: Second chapter coming soon! Comments would be lovely! Thanks so much! :)
