Arlise's POV

I sit there, on the curb, two streets over from the school. I have to go, I don't want to, though. I was happy with were I was in the home, sitting quietly, reading a book. Why would they kick me out? I was always good. Always. So why did they kick me out again? Oh, yeah. I was to old and no one wanted me. The weird, non-talking teenager. So they through my out here, saying I was going to school like any other kid and that some one would pick me up like a stray.

I sigh and take out my compact. I open it and stare at the picture of my parents. The looked so happy. The picture was taken when I was first born, fourteen years ago. The picture, over the years, had crumpled around the edges and was bent left, right and center. I looked in the dirty mirror, checking to make sure that my black bow was tied tightly on my head.

I closed the compact and stood. I shoved it into my pocket, hiked my bag over my shoulder more and took off to the school. I was sniffing the air, catching some strange scents. I had lived with humans all my life and had memorized their scents, but these were different, stronger. I was on the schools ground by now, and was getting some glances and glares from others. I looked around, feeling like I wanted to shrink back and disappear.

I closed my eyes and breathed in. I exhaled and then started walking to the school. The halls were crowded but not too crowded. I attempted to make my way to the main office, I said attempted. I was purposely shoved into the wall. I fell to the ground with a whimper. "Look, a freak." Some guy said, laughing along with others. Another came up to me, took a fist full of hair in their hand and yanked. I yelped.

I knew there would be more, I was a freak, they just didn't know how much of one. They didn't know what the black bow on my head meant, what it hid. I was thrown into the wall again, a sharp pain going through out my body. I looked up, no tears in my eyes. I never cried. And I wouldn't start today. I just gave them my usual look, the look of, "Trying to get a reaction from me?" Yea, that one. They didn't like this, that was for sure. But before they could do it again, another male came up and stopped them."Leave, now." He commanded. They all looked down muttered, "Yes Beta." and left.

I looked down at my wrist. I knew it was broken, but It was healing already. The male came over to me and squatted down. "Hey, I'm Nolan." He smiled and held a hand out. I stared at it for the longest time, wondering what he wanted. He chuckled. "You're supposed to shake it." He said lightly. I hesitantly shook his hand, but with the one that was broken. He frowned. "Didn't you brake that one?" He asked, confused. I pulled my hand away and stood. He followed suit.

He was tall. Like, really tall. He most likely stood at 6'3 or something. And that was a lot compared to my 4'3 height. I grabbed my bag and looked up at him. "Umm. Could you show me to the office?" I asked him quietly. He nodded. "Of course. Right this way." I followed him, try to keep up with his long strides. "So, what's your name?" He asked. I hesitated. "Arlise." I finally said. "It's a Native/ Greek name mixed together." I explained. He nodded. "So, why'd your parents decide on this school?" He asked. I stopped walking.

"Actually, um, the foster home I was at decided on it. My parents died a few years after I was born. I barely remember them." I said with a shrug. He looked at me with sympathy. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up." He apologized. I shrugged again. "S'okay. I don't remember them any ways." I told him, and started walking again. "So, foster home, huh?" He asked. I nodded. "Well, not any more They kicked me out." I told him. "Wow. No offence, but your life sucks." He said. And it was the truth. "Yeah. I know." I said. We stopped in front of the office. I turned to him.

"Thanks for saving my butt back there." I told him. He shrugged. "S'okay." I nodded and went to go in, but he stopped me. "Do you need a place to stay? My place is huge. Like, hundreds of people live in it." He asked. I thought about it. It was better than the cold street. "Sure." I said. He smiled. "Cool. I'll see you at lunch. Bye!" He said, walking away from me and down the hall. I waved, a smile playing at me lips. I walked into the office and went up to the desk. It was taller than me, which made it hard to ask the lady.
