Richard typed on his computer his recent police report he had just finished earlier that day. He looked at the clock across the room on the wall in the office. He rests his chin on his fist. The clock ticked away the seconds as the precinct buzzed with excitement. He looks over to his partners desk and see an empty chair. The name on the desk read Carter Montgomery in dark block letters on a gold plated name tag. " Hm, I wonder where he could be." he murmured as a criminal was being hustled into a holding cell. Richard slid his chair from under his desk and stood up. He straightened his suit. He leisured his way over to the water cooler. He slipped out one paper cup from the metal dispenser and drew a cool cup of water. Richard looked on throughout the office. His desk was perfectly organized into neat categories. His partner, however, was a complete slob. An internal grunt reverberated in his throat.
"Shields! In my office!" the Chief Officer's voice boomed. Richard quickly threw away his paper cup. He never had heard that tone of voice from the Chief. Richard felt eyes staring at him from around the room. Richard slightly rushed his steps as he approached the office."Um, Sir, is there something you wanted to tell me?" Richard said quietly as he entered the room. The Chief faced the giant window. " I see the work you have been doing. I wanted to talk about your working style." His voice was solid and cold. Richard tried to read his body language but with his back turned, there wasn't much he could learn about the situation. "What about my working style Sir?" "Your working style is not fit for our precinct."
"What do you mean, Sir? You've said before that I have the best success rate of this whole precinct."
" You DO have the highest success rate of this whole precinct. That is why you are receiving a promotion." The Chief turned around with a wide, toothy smile. His cigar stuck out the side of his mouth. " I simply wanted you to be a detective but you're too good for that. the head of the bureau wants you there as soon as you can get there!" He smiled joyously
The door to the office opened and my partner, Carter stepped in with a large cake in his hands. A smile was spread from ear to ear on his freckled face. The ginger howled a cheer and placed the cake on the chief's desk.
"But chief, I dont understand. Where am I suppose to go? And what am I suppose to do?" Richard spouted worriedly. " I really am unsure about what is suppose to happen. All i know for sure is that I am getting a new job in a new place away from my regular home." The chief smiled again and slammed his hand on my shoulder. " You're a good man Richard. You'll figure out your path soon enough. But now, we celebrate!" " But chief, it's still work hours." Ricard protests and he sees that it is only luncg time at the precinct. " Not for the three of us. We are going out for drinks." "But its only mid day!" Ricard protested. The chief and Carter started to push Richard out the door. " It's five o' clock somewhere!" both Carter and the chief exclaimed as they all left the precinct.
