"Okay ma'am, so what did you say this 'Jacob' looked like again?" A policeman with blonde hair that had an odd cowlick and bright blue eyes asked Melissa inside the interrogation room, the comfortable one set up for victims and witnesses.
"H-he was tall, about s-six foot five, and his h-hair was a brown color," Melissa sobbed out, "and his eyes were green, like emeralds."
"Are you sure it's him, love?" another policeman, this one with unruly dirty blonde hair and eyes brown like wood, asked her.
"Y-yes! The message said that I shouldn't have left him at the s-store... Jacob was the only person I'd had any interaction with!" Melissa was nearly sick with panic and these detectives didn't think she had the right person. They were going to leave her to fend for herself while a horrible serial killer was out for her heart; whether literal or figurative terminology used on that sentence didn't matter. It was horrifying either way.
"Well try to find this 'Jacob' for you, love, but there's no guarantee we'll convict him even if he is the killer," the man with the brown eyes sighed, "The murderer has been very careful up to this point. We have no DNA or finger prints to connect anyone to any of these crimes."
"We can still try, Henry," the one with the blue eyes argued, "We need to. Leave it to the DA to convict him."
"I suppose that's all we can do for now," 'Henry' replied with a sigh, "I always hate these kinds of cases. Not enough evidence to get even an arrest warrant."
"Wh-what's going to happen to me?" Melissa questioned in a small voice.
"Well, we'll put you in a safe hotel for the time being," the blue-eyed one smiled at me, making me feel safe, "We'll even put a police detail on the door so this 'Jacob' can't get to you."
"Thank you," she gasped in relief, "Thank you!"
"This police officer will escort you to the hotel," Henry opened the door to reveal a woman with long brown hair and a police uniform on, "Her name is Elizabeth."
"I'll make sure to keep you nice and safe," Elizabeth promised, bush green eyes shining with hope and tenacity.
"Go on, Miss Rose," aqua blue eyes encouraged Melissa on her way as Elizabeth hurried the slightly younger woman into her police car and drove off. Melissa tried not to look out the window for fear of seeing Jacob again and being murdered just like those six, or now rather seven, women before her.
"Don't worry; this hotel is so far out of the way that no one will ever possibly suspect you of being here," Elizabeth's green eyes met Melissa's red ones in a calming glance.
An hour or so later, they finally arrived at the hotel and signed in. Elizabeth warned Melissa to not open the door for anyone, not even her. "If I'm not being forced inside, then I will have my key on me. If I say I've forgotten it, then know I'm being held with some kind of weapon to my back," her orders were strict and to the point, no one in and Melissa doesn't go out.
"Yes, ma'am," she nodded, understanding the strictness was for her own protection.
Only a few hours later, it being ten at night or so, Elizabeth went out... and she didn't come back... for quite a while. Melissa started to get worried. Elizabeth had only gone out to get a candy bar from the machine from down the hall, but it'd already been ten minutes and she wasn't back yet.
'Maybe I should go check on her?' Melissa thought silently to herself, 'But I'm not supposed to go out, no matter what. I'm sure she's fine...' Just as she thought this, there was a knock on the door.
"Melissa, open the door," Elizabeth's strong voice drifted through the wood of the door, "I forgot my door key." Those words. Melissa knew those words. Slowly and quietly, she crept up to the door and peeked through the peephole. Elizabeth was out there, green eyes teary and clouded with sadness. A dark, and familiar, figure loomed behind her with an ominous aura, green eyes shining in the darkness.
"I told you she isn't here," Elizabeth turned to the man behind her, whom Melissa had identified as Jacob, "She never was." As she turned, something glinted in the new light, catching Melissa's eye. A knife was held tight in the murderous male's grip, firmly aimed to shank the brunette if the need arose.
"Do not lie to me!" Jacob roared in anger, "I saw you and my love leave together, I saw you two come in here, I saw you check in, I saweverything."
"It is my job to protect her, you will not get in there," holding true to her promise of protection, Elizabeth's eyes shown in determination.
"Do you love your job?" Jacob's eyes shown in evil delight. He was planning something.
"Of course I do, why-?" her question was cut off as Jacob's hand jutted forward, plunging the knife deep into her stomach.
"I'm sorry this murder was on the fly," he smirked darkly as she coughed up blood, "Now I can't give your heart to my perfect little Melissa."
"You sick... monster," Elizabeth's last breath was spent cursing Jacob and his descendants. As her green eyes emptied of the last of her tenacity and determination, Jacob ripped the knife out of her stomach and pushed her oozing red figure out of the way like it was some sort of reeking pile of garbage.
Inside the room, Melissa cried silently and ran to the closet to hide. She hugged her knees close to herself as she heard the door being kicked in.
"My pretty little albino~ don't hide from me!" Although his voice sounded sweet, there was a malicious tone underlying it. Melissa heard him ripping up the room looking for her. He made his way over to the closet and tore the door off the hinges, smiling evilly down at her.
"N-no..." Melissa sobbed quietly.
"Oh don't cry, sweetness," Jacob swept Melissa up and into his arms, "I'm here now."
"E-Elizabeth... she's d-dead," Melissa thought only of how that brave young woman had had her life cut short because of this man. This man who was currently petting her snow hair and cooing calming words softly into her ears.
"Don't worry, I made the bad woman go away," he smiled sweetly, demeanor completely changing from earlier, "I just need to write a quick message for the detectives and then we can go back to my house. We'll be all alone and safe there."
"No! No! I don't want to go!" Melissa suddenly regained her awareness and struggled to escape his iron grasp.
"Someone's excited! But you need to calm down, someone might mistake your screams for something else and call the police prematurely," Jacob smiled gently and placed a rag reeking of chloroform over Melissa's mouth, "Now don't struggle too much or you'll get hurt. And make sure to take deep breaths." Due to Melissa's crying, her deep breaths were unpreventable and it took only a few moments for her to succumb to the chemical's tranquilizing effects.
"There, there, princess," Jacob pet his heart's desire gently and carried her into his car, running back to the room afterwards to leave a little message for the detectives to find in the morning.
...
Hours later, long after dawn, police cruisers arrived on the scene of Officer Elizabeth's brutal murder. Like the other Bloody Bachelor victims, her stomach and chest cavity had been carved open, guts strewn around the room, bloody splattered everywhere, and heart ripped out. This time, however, her heart had been mashed and was lying in a bloody heap upon the floor, next to another bloody message. This one was addressed to the police.
You tried to take my love from me,
So I took one of your own.
She was in my way.
This is what happens to those who get in my way.
"We're too late," Henry sighed to his blue-eyed partner, Toby, "He's taken our witness and killed one of our own to do it... she's gone."
