They're, Their, There
So I've noticed a lot of writers make mistakes with this and no one points it out even though it's there from beginning to end, but then again some people have really low standards.
There- Use when referring to a place, be it concrete- 'over there behind the shop' or abstract- 'I would hate to live there.' Also use with the verb 'to be' which includes 'is, am, are, were, was'- 'I see there are lots of unicorns in your house', 'There is a cat that can talk here'
'There is a warlock in Sheffield', 'There are several issues to be solved'
Their- Use to indicate possession and that a noun to belongs to them- 'My family gave away their car', 'All their things are broken'
They're- First things first it is a contraction of 'they' and 'are'. If you didn't know then go back to primary school. It is only used as a subject (who or what does the action) and verb (a doing word, the action itself) - 'They're coming after us', 'They're dead'
How to Check!
Can 'there' be replaced by 'here'?
Can 'their' be replaced by 'our'?
Can 'they're' be replaced by 'they are'?
If not go back and check. Remember practice makes perfect.
Your and You're
A lot of people get this wrong even though it can drastically change what you're saying. Once you've read below, you'll realise what a douche you are for getting it wrong. It's simple.
Your- Your is the possessive form of 'you'. Referring to something that a person has or something that belongs to the person in question.
'Your bag is at my house,' 'Your hair is shining,' Your head is up your arse'
You're- The basic is that it's a contraction of 'you' and 'are' so 'you are'
'You're smelling like a cow on fire' is 'You are smelling like a cow on fire'
'You're more stupid than a dog in heat,' is 'You are more stupid than a dog in heat'
What your mistakes look like
'You're dog is smelly' would be 'You are dog smelly' >>> These are the mistakes you're making. It's a stupid rookie mistake. Please don't do it. It annoys the shit out of me.
