"Get the engine going Steven!" I yelled as we ran out of the factory. The Sedan swerved in front of us so we could climb in, then swerved out as soon as the doors closed. "Why are we- "Weave around so they don't shoot us!" I yelled over him. Already I could see bullets hitting the buildings near us. But if I'm telling you this, we're going to have to back up to why this is happening. When all of us went in, we were sat down in the middle of the facility and Enrico let us ask our questions. It was all going as planned till one of the guys tried to steal something out of Rick's pocket and he hit him. The guy immediately put his gun to our heads. "You guys have three seconds to get out or I waste some ammo." He yelled. I kicked over my chair like a hurdle and started sprinting towards the door, Rick and Brock right on my heels. It was then that I yelled. "Get the engine going Steven!"
Even though we all got out of there safely, we now had a clan of criminals and ex military angry at us. But we had to keep on this case. "How did Lindsey know that ruthless idiot?" Yelled Rick. "He went to our high school, and at one of the dances she rejected him. He's hated her ever since." Replied Brock "Do you know anyone else you could fit that description?" Steven questioned. "You'll have to give me the night to sleep on it." He replied again. I nodded, "Everyone should go to sleep, and we'll meet again tomorrow."
My clock read 5 am, and I was already rereading the case for the fifteenth time. All of it didn't add up. It would have to be someone old enough to drive, and someone who had known that Lindsey would be in the front room at that time. The only place we hadn't checked out was the nearby daycare, where Lindsey made little money from in her spare time. Thats where we were going today.
As we walked into the door, Rick showed his badge to the clerk. "We're investigating a crime scene that leads to this area, so you wouldn't mind if we searched the area, right?" Halfway through the question a lean worker walked into the room, heard Rick, and immediately scrambled away in a white face. "Get him!" I yelled, sprinting after the escapee. He lead us down the back alley, then criss crossed through a maze of dirt roads and industrial buildings. Rick took a shortcut and was able to body slam him at one of the intersections. Taking out his gun, Rick asked through heaves of air. "Why are you running sonny?" "It was three months ago, and I was dared to do it! Please don't put me in jail, I have to get into a good college!" He sobbed. "Dude, pull it together. What did you do?" He obviously wasn't the killer, but I was curious to see what happened. "Three months ago I took a test that was coming up, then copied and sold the version of it my brother did. He got 100% and I knew kids would buy it. I needed a way to pay for college!" He said over tears. Selling tests was a bad offense, but we would need to deal with it later.
As we were walking back in, one of runners of the program walked in from the 2 month- 5 month area. "Hey Jack, how are you holding up?" He asked sincerely with a smile on his face. "Wait, how do you know my name?" I was getting a headache, why did I feel like I know him? "You used to work here silly, but you got fired after that big dispute with Lindsey. You two seemed like you really knew each other, then you got in a big fight. You seemed really unstable afterwards, so we decided that maybe you shouldn't be working with kids. No hard feelings, right?" At the mention of Lindsey again I had a flashback.
It was like a slideshow of me and Lindsey laughing, role playing with children, and even the two of us kissing in the supply closet. Then came dark photos of us getting angry, fighting and upsetting the babies. Then came the darkest thing I had ever seen. A memory of me looking through a scope, targeted at Lindsey's head.
I snapped back into the present when I heard the bang of a rifle. My knees instantly buckled, and I crumpled to the floor. In the background I heard Rick asking if I was okay, but all I could do was mumble "I killed her, I killed her, I killed her."
