I was sitting on my bed listening to Heart Breaker playing on the small radio that was in the room when I heard a knock. I was stayed in my room all the time except to use the bathroom, so I knew it was probably one of the employees here. I didn't get up because I know eventually they would go away. But when the knocking stopped, instead of the person going away the door opened. Lindsey Peters - my case worker- stepped in with a smile on her face.
"Find me another home?" I asked boringly.
"I did actually. But I think you'll be more happy about this one. You actually know them," Lindsey said sitting in the chair in my room.
"Did one of my relatives finally decide to take me in?" I asked turning the radio off.
"Sadly no. It's a family friend. They knew your parents and unfortunately only spoke over the phone and hung out in their earlier years- when they weren't the bad people. They read your file after they found out your parents died and decided you would make a perfect edition to their...spacious family," Lindsey said pulling out a couple papers from the file on her lap.
"What are their names?"
"James and Jamie Ryan. They live in Miami" Lindsey said.
"I know them. They would always make sure I was okay after my parents parties by calling me," I replied.
"Well they would like to take you in. I really think that this will be the last time. So I want to tell you it was a nice experience to get to work with you. I will however have to check up on you in a month to see how your adjusting."
"When am I leaving?"
"You have tonight to pack your stuff and then you'll fly to a connecting plane in Chicago. And from there you'll fly to the Miami airport where James and Jamie will meet you and take you to your new home. I can be with you on your drive to the airport but from there you'll be on your own," Lindsey said standing up from her chair.
"Thank you. For everything," I said standing up to hug her.
"Your welcome Payton. I'll see you tomorrow. The employees will wake you up at seven a.m. tomorrow to get ready and then I'll be here to pick you up at eight. Goodnight Payton," Lindsey said to me smiling before walking out of my room and closing the door.
I relaxed a considerable amount after she told me I would be going to live with someone I actually knew. Jamie was a really nice lady; always was a motherly person to me. I never saw her face to face though which was sad. She stopped calling once she figured out that my parents died. It must have taken a while to make the right calls to figure out where I was and who I was with otherwise she would have decided sooner to take me in. I know Jamie, she cared about any child who needed her help. James on the other hand reminded me of Officer James who helped me so long ago. James Ryan was a really nice man. He was strict sometimes but I remember Jamie telling me about Cole and Steven when they were younger. I never really knew if Jamie and James had any more kids...I guess I would find out. But James' strict nature was also in part to his military background.
I was sort of excited to be living with them. It was a family I sort of knew and I know that Jamie wont give me back. My birthday was in a month and I was turning sixteen and I couldn't be happier. I always wanted to find my true home with a family before I was sixteen so that I could have at least a couple years with a real family before I have to leave. I was really happy that Jamie and James had decided to take me in. At last I was finally getting my perfect family.
That night....my dreams were at least somewhat happy. I did jolt awake in the middle of the night from my dream of the person that shot my parents shooting me instead. That one was a little disturbing but I fell back into a sleep easily. I couldn't wait until tomorrow...
