Chapter Ten

***************************

“What the fuck?” Chance exploded, rubbing his cheek.

Okay, I felt slightly guilty for slapping Chance. He hadn’t deserved it. My emotions just got the best of me and I needed someone to take out my left over anger and fear on.

“Sorry,” I mumbled and cast my gaze down, too afraid to meet’s Chance’s eyes.

I heard him scoff. “Get out of the car.”

At this, I looked up. “What? No.”

Chance’s irises darkened. “Get out of the car.”

“I’m not going in there,” I pointed to the run-down warehouse.

“Too bad. You have no choice.”

“You can’t force me,” I shot back.

Chance leaned down, his forehead inches from mine. “Last time I checked, you worked for me. And, as your employer, you have to listen to me.”

“I didn’t sign up for this.”

“You sure about that?” Chance smirked.

My blood boiled. There was no way I was stepping foot in that lousy excuse for a warehouse. I’d probably get shot or gang-raped the second I walked in.

Chance must’ve seen my fear. His eyes narrowed. “If you continue to work for me, than you’ll encounter a lot of things more frightening than this. So you better grow a pair and get your ass out here. I’m not waiting any longer.”

“No,” I fought.

Chance swore. Before I knew what he was doing, he reached in and unfastened my seatbelt. His arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me out of the car. My world was turned upside down as he flipped me over his shoulder.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Taking you inside.”

“Put me down!” I yelled.

I liked to admire Chance’s ass from afar. I didn’t want my face practically shoved in it like it was right now.

“Not until we’re inside.”

“Do you have a death wish?” I screeched.

Chance stopped. “The people in that warehouse are not going hurt me. I can take care of myself.”

“What about me? What if they want to kill me?”

“They won’t harm you. I’m positive. And besides, I wouldn’t let anyone lay a hand on you. In case you haven’t noticed yet, you work for me. That makes you mine. I don’t allow others to touch what’s mine.”

I froze. The intensity in his voice had me shivering. I couldn’t see his eyes, but I imagined his irises to be smoldering.

“I don’t like this”

Chance grumbled, “Get over it.”

As Chance walked us to the warehouse, I noticed how dark it suddenly got. Last time I looked at a clock, it was noon. Right now I estimated it to be around three.

The sun should’ve been out and shining, but dark clouds obscured the usually bright star. Back in California, we didn’t get much rain. Yet, I knew the signs of an impending storm, and right now it looked like it was about to pour.

Chance seemed to have noticed the ominous clouds too because he quickened his pace. A moment later, I was set back on my feet.

My vision swam.

 Whoa, head rush.

I swayed. Lighting fast, Chance’s arm shot out and wrapped around my waist. I let myself lean into him as my wits returned.

“Thanks,” I said, my voice hoarse.

Chance nodded. His arm around my waist moved to capture my hand. He gripped it tightly. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to be reassuring or just making sure I didn’t run away. I figured a little bit of both.

The warehouse loomed in front of us, casting a shadow over Chance’s face. Normally Chance was clean shaven, but he must’ve forgotten to shave this morning because dark stubble contoured his chiseled jaw line.

As if he felt my stare, he turned to face me. “Ready?”

I simply nodded.

There was a harsh grinding sound as Chance pushed open a faded red metal door. Written in black graffiti on it were the words Kill Joint.

My blood turned cold. Chance, seeming unaffected, forged ahead, dragging me behind him.

Light flooded my eyes, temporarily blinding me. Squinting, I looked at my surroundings.

I expected the warehouse to be empty. Instead, it was filled to the brim with wooden crates. I had no idea what was in the crates, but for some reason, my over-active imagination pictured dead bodies. I tried not to gag.

Shifting my gaze to the left, my eyes landed on the two men from before. I froze. Involuntarily, I took a step closer to Chance. His grip around my hand tightened.

The blond one met my stare, while the other brunette one continued to chow down on a bag of Cheetos. My eyes widened when I noticed a long, jagged scar down the side of his cheek. Repulsed, I looked away.

Apparently, those two gargantuans weren’t the only ones in here. Other men were lounging around in the corners, some drinking beer and other various liquors.

To my right, more men were gathered around a small table. It looked as if they were playing poker or blackjack.

I moved even closer to Chance. There were no woman in here. I was an easy target if one of these men were in the mood.

Thinking about that had me remembering Chance’s earlier words. He’d told me that he wouldn’t let anyone lay a hand on me. I believed him, but was not reassured.

Chance was a twenty-one year old guy. All these men were practically full blown sumo-wrestlers. Granted, Chance could probably hold his own for awhile, but he was only one man. There were probably twenty guys in here.

“Well if it isn’t Chance Burke,” an amused voice said from behind us.

Immediately, Chance’s head perked up, a grin coming to his face. I almost had to do a double take. I hadn’t seen Chance smile like that in…well, actually, I’d never seen him smile like that.

His hand in mine disappeared and he rushed towards the owner of the voice. Curious, I turned around.

My eyes landed on a young man. He was around Chance’s age and devilishly handsome. His looks were nothing compared to Chance’s, but he was still a ten in my book.

His dark hair was slightly spiked in the front giving him that edgy bad-boy look. Dark brows and lashes framed his serpentine green eyes. He wore a tight black t-shirt that showed off his bronze, well-muscled arms and dark jeans.

“Cooper, man I haven’t see you in ages,” Chance grinned and then proceeded to give Cooper one of those awkward bro-hugs.

Meanwhile, I just stared in awe.

Chance had friends?
