"Maybe we should leave,"said Daniel. He wanted to leave before the fire spread."We can't leave. We have to help!"said Kate. The foursome began looking through the rubble. They stepped over broken glass, chunks of concrete, and bricks. They passed twisted trolley car tracks and toppled over lamps. They saw houses that looked like-"Look!That house looks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa!"said Daniel. They saw people hauling their things into the street."How are we supposed to help?"asked Lucille."What about we help them,"said Kate, pointing to a group of men frantically dragging things out of a building and loading them into a horse-drawn wagon.Kate rushed over to the wagon."What are you doing?"she asked the men."We're trying to get these bank bags down to the harbor,so a boat can take them into the bay,"
said a man throwing a bag into the wagon."Why?"asked Mason."So we can save everyone's money from the fires!"the man said, pointing to the sky.The cloud of smoke was getting bigger and blacker."Can we help?"asked Kate."They're done,"said the driver of the wagon."You kids run home to your parents. Then get out of the city."Mason wished he,Lucille,Daniel, and Kate could ride with the driver down to the bay and be safe from the fires too.But he could see that the wagon didn't have room for them."Good luck!"shouted Kate."Don't forget what I told you!"the driver said. Then he and his horses took off.The wagon turned onto a main street and disappeared over a hill."I wonder who we can help,"said Kate."I don't know,"said Lucille.Suddenly, a woman ran up to them.A man was next to her, carrying a big camera and a three-legged stand."Hey,what's the story?"the woman asked."What story?"asked Kate."The story with the bank.My name's Bettie.I'm a reporter,"said the woman."For television?"asked Kate."What's that?"asked Bettie."Never mind,"said Lucille. She whispered quickly to Kate,"She's a reporter for the newspaper.Television hasn't been invented yet." "Oops,"said Kate."So what's the story with the wagon that just left the bank?"asked Bettie."They're going to save the money by taking it to the bay and putting it on a boat,"said Mason."Good reporting, sonny!"said Bettie."Get a picture of the bank,Fredrick."Fredrick set his camera on the stand. He put his head under a black curtain and took a picture."Got it,"said Fredrick. As he packed up his equipment,Bettie turned to Kate,Lucille,Mason, and Daniel."Go home and get your parents, kids. The fires are burning out of control,"she said."We know.By the end of three days, all of San Francisco will be destroyed,"said Lucille."How do you know?"asked Bettie curiously."She's just guessing,"said Daniel quickly."Pretty gloomy guess,"said Bettie."Tell your folks not to catch the ferry.Thousands are crowding into the ferry building.Instead,go to Golden Gate Park." "Thanks for the tip,"said Kate."Thanks for the story,"said Bettie. Then, she and Fredrick hurried away.Kate and her friends looked around. Now many people were fleeing their homes. Some were going up the hill. Some were going down.An old woman was pushing a wagon of homewares.A girl was carrying a suitcase and a cat.A boy was carrying a fishbowl."They're all going in different directions,"said Kate."I wonder where Golden Gate Park is.Maybe we should go there,"said Daniel. He looked around for a street sign to see where they were.Lucille saw a man carrying books out of a fancy building. He put the books onto a horse-drawn wagon."What's he doing?"asked Lucille."I think he's saving those books,"said Kate."Saving books?"said Lucille. She forgot about her fears and trying to save herself."Come on.We'd better help,"she said.
