"We better be careful,"said Mason.They stepped in their sock feet over the broken cobblestones,trying not to hurt themselves.They headed down the hillside.On their way,they saw paramedics carrying stretchers with injured people on them.They passed soldiers directing those trying to escape the fires.A man was trying to push a piano down the street.Another man was carrying a stack of hats.A woman carried her three Chihuahuas in a purse."Everyone's trying to save what's important to them,"said Kate."Like us.We're trying to save this sign,"said Lucille clutching the piece of wood.When they were halfway up the hill,a soldier on a horse galloped ahead of them."Get off the street!We're setting dynamite!"he shouted."Dynamite?"asked Mason."WHAT?!!!,"screamed Kate.People started running in all directions.
Lucille looked around wildly for a safe place to go.She saw an alley."Over there!"said Lucille,pointing to the alley.Mason,Lucille,Kate,and Daniel ran into the alley and crouched on the ground.A few seconds later,a blast of dynamite shook the ground.Dirt and dust flew everywhere,even down the alley.Lucille held the sign with one hand.She covered her eyes with her other hand.Her friends did the same.Another blast shook the ground.Daniel tasted grit in his mouth.He looked at Lucille.She was caked in dust,head to toe.Daniel was just as dirty as she was."Hey,would you look at those four!Now, that's a story,"someone said.Lucille and her friends looked up.It was Bettie and Fredrick!Although they were covered in dirt,Fredrick was setting up his camera,and Bettie was taking notes in her notebook."Hold up your sign,dear,"said Bettie.Too stunned to say anything,Lucille held up the sign with the poem of hope on it.Fredrick took a picture.Another dynamite blast shook the ground."Come with us!We're headed to the park,"said Bettie."We can't.We're on our way home to our parents,"said Kate."Well,be safe.Let's beat it,Fredrick!"said Bettie.Fredrick grabbed his camera equipment,and the two of them rushed off."I don't think Bettie and Fredrick recognized us,"said Kate."I don't recognize us,"said Lucille.Another blast shook the ground."Let's beat it!"said Daniel.Lucille stood up.Then she and her friends continued up the hill.
