Lucille ran down the street to the book wagon,with Daniel,Kate,and Mason at her heels.The man was carefully stacking books in the back of the wagon.He was covered in dust and his glasses were cracked."Hey,what's the story?"asked Kate.Mason couldn't help smiling.Kate sounded just like Bettie."I'm moving all the rare books to the Mechanics' Pavilion,"the man said."Can we help?"asked Lucille."Sure!There are only a few books left by the front.Hurry,please!The fires on Market Street will soon come this way."Lucille,Daniel,Mason,and Kate ran into the building.Near the door were four stacks of books.The four friends each took a stack.The books looked very old and fancy.Some even had sparkling gold on their covers!"Wow,"whispered Lucille.Then,she,Kate,Mason,and Daniel carried the books outside."Careful,please.All these books are treasures-ancient bibles and hand-painted books,"said the man.He carefully took all the books from Lucille,Daniel,Kate,and Mason's hands and put them in the wagon."Thanks!Go home to your parents now!The fires will be here soon,"he said,tipping his hat.As the horse went up a hill,Kate shouted "Good luck!"Lucille had a panicked face."What?"asked Kate."The books!I remember in History class that when they took the books,Mechanics' Pavilion burned,but the building they were originally in didn't!"Lucille said."So tell them!"said Daniel."Stop!Stop!"cried Lucille.She ran after the wagon with Kate,Daniel,and Mason.They all yelled"Stop!"They ran over broken glass and cobblestones.Finally,at the top the man finally heard them.He halted his wagon."You can't go to Mechanics' Pavilion!"Lucille cried."You have to to take them back into the building they were in!"said Daniel."They won't burn there.Mechanics' Pavilion will burn instead!"said Lucille.The driver looked at Lucille,Mason,Daniel,and Kate as if they were crazy."You kids need to worry about yourselves,not these books.Go home to your parents.I'll take care of the library,"he said.Then,the man snapped his reins and went over the hill."Come back!"Lucille cried.She watched helplessly as the wagon bumped down a street.Smoke billowed up from the bottom of the hill."I can't believe it,"Lucille said.She burst into tears."We tried,but we couldn't save them,"said Kate touching Lucille's shoulder gently."All those books...."Lucille's voice trailed off."Hey!Someone else is crying over there-someone with two kids.Maybe we can help them,"said Kate.
