The hallway was basically deserted. A shiver ran down my spine as walked down the almost empty hallway and to my locker. I looked up at the large, circular clock as I walked past it. It was 6:50 AM-School didn't start in an hour and 10 minutes. It was normal for me to arrive in school early. But what wasn't normal about that day was the lack of communication between Ashton and I. The school bell ringing was usually our conversation ender. But seeing that he wasn't really in the mood to talk, I knew that I pretty much had a lot of time to waste. After placing my things in my locker, I decided to walk around the campus.

Our school campus is a massive place. There are 7 buildings-one for pre-school, one for grade school, one for middle school, one for high school, the gymnasium and the cafeteria. Then, there are the dorms-two large, condominium-like buildings. Not many of us live far enough to avail of the dorm for an entire school year, however, the dorms do come in handy whenever we have a ton of school projects. There was even a curfew-nobody could stay outside the dorm at past 6 in the evening, unless they had a permit. Furthermore, the girls and guys were segregated from each other. The school probably enforced these rules for safety purposes, nevertheless, there were still a lot of issues within the concrete walls of the building. Being a dormer-or even staying in the dorm-wasn't for those weak in spirit. Prior to us transferring to a house near the school, I myself had a rough time in the dorm.

Whether or not you stayed in the dorm for the entire school year or you just stayed in the dorm for a night or two, you'd still have to put up with sharing a room with people. I was a "permanent dormer", as people called those who stayed in the dorm for months, because of the distance between my former house and the school. I was roommates with Calum Hood, the most popular guy in school. When his best friend, Ryan Jacobs wasn't staying in the dorm, which happened every now and then, Calum was alright. We could stay up all night talking about homework, how the cafeteria food tasted like crap... we could even watch Netflix until 3 in the morning, or until we'd lose our sanity. But when that Ryan Jacobs was around, life was practically hell for me. Even back in first grade, when I first entered the dorm, Ryan always held some sort of grudge against me. He'd taunt me and call me names-worse yet, he always got Calum to join along. I couldn't do anything about it. After all, they were the alpha team and I was the reject. The best I could do was run.

Because of the curfew, the window was out of the question. There were only 3 ways out-the bathroom vent, the door leading to the next room and the door leading to the hallway. The next room was secured by a combination lock and the 2 other ways out were blocked by Calum and Ryan, so I was basically screwed. Whenever I was alone in the dorm, I tried various combinations on the lock, but none that I tried worked. For years, I had two life goals-to get out of the dorm or to figure out a way to escape.

By the time we entered middle school, Ryan and Calum began to get violent enough to push me against the wall and land punches in my face. It was rare to see me without bruises or a bloody nose. Being the kind of person who never found expressing emotions easy, I never told anyone about what happened at the dorm. I always said that I fell during Physical Education, which was believable, considering how inept I was in sports. But as the years progressed and my friendship with Ashton blossomed into the affinity we now share, he began to see past the walls of insecurity that I always had up. In spite of the fact that he could practically see me inside out, Ashton never judged me, unlike a lot of the people who I considered "close friends". Because of this, I learned to confide in Ashton the secrets I never told anyone, which included my dorm dilemma.
