Luke and I sat on the couch, in the same spot we had sat in yesterday, and reviewed what we had learned in class that day and I explained anything he didn't understand.
"So," I said, deciding to be a bit bold. "Are you going to tell me what your other grades are? Because I saw how shocked James was when you said I was tutoring you."
Luke frowned and took his time to decide on whether or not he should answer the question.
Finally, he sighed and gave in. "I'm a straight A student. This is the first course I've ever taken that I needed help in."
"Why do you want to keep that a secret?"
"Because everyone I hang out with isn't. For the most part. Jai and Beau are great. James and Daniel try and so does Kaitlyn, but..."
He trailed off so I picked up. "It's Sarah, isn't it?"
Luke nodded and his eyes looked to the floor.
“What does she have on you that makes you so afraid of her?” I asked in barely more than a whisper.
His head snapped up and he glared at me, his eyes flashing angrily. “I’m not afraid of her. What are you, some kind of counselor? It’s none of your concern. Stop asking me questions.”
Silence rang throughout the room, the only sound being the faint buzz of the television in the basement.
“Why do you even care?”
I was completely taken by surprise when I heard those words come from Luke's mouth. He had returned to staring at the floor and the words had been faint, but they had been said.
“I don’t know,” I replied in the same tone.
He looked at me with his eyebrows furrowed and his eyes watching me with a curious, wondering expression.
After a minute, he looked away and cleared his throat, standing up.
“I should go.”
I nodded and we walked to the door.
“Will you be back tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow is Friday,” he stated while putting his shoes on.
I laughed slightly. “Yes, Einstein, it is. Good job, would you like a cookie?”
He scowled and ignored my sarcastic retort. “Do you think we could meet at lunch? I’m sort of busy after school.”
I was taken aback at that question. He actually wanted to meet at lunch?
I smiled and nodded. “Yeah, sure, of course. Back table in the library?”
“Sounds good. I’ll see you there.” He smiled and walked out the door, closing it softly behind him.
I sighed happily and sat back down on the couch. Luke was turning into a really nice person. I actually enjoyed his company and I found myself wishing that he was still here. I turned the TV on, but didn’t pay attention and just rifted through my scattered thoughts.
Even though Luke still had his outbursts of aggression, I still liked being with him. Especially when he was sweet and open. I loved seeing the ‘real him’. I frowned when I thought of the reason behind everything being the way it was. Why I was bullied, why Luke was so defensive and angry. Everything led down to one common factor; Sarah. Everything pointed back to her. I wanted to know more than anything why Luke was so afraid of her. If it wasn’t for her, I’m sure that he would have a completely different reputation and no one would be afraid of him.
I had been too nervous to ask him about it, and I hadn’t wanted to be nosy, but I was also curious to see what the message had been about that he had gotten when we had been eating. That had changed his mood dramatically. Whatever it was, it couldn’t have been good.
I heard the door to the basement open and my dad walked into the room. He smiled at me and sat down in the La-Z-Boy, giving me a knowing look.
“What?” I asked, not being able to stand the silence between us.
“How’d it go?” he replied, still grinning.
I sighed, shaking my head. “You sound like a teenage girl looking for gossip.”
He shrugged. “Well, Luke seems like a nice lad and I just thought that maybe you… liked him?”
My mouth fell open and I gaped at him. “What?”
He put his hands up in defense. “Hey, it was just an assumption.”
“Well you assumed wrong.”
My dad’s grin fell to a frown and he looked like he had just realized something. “Where’s your car?”
I froze for a second. I had known that he was going to ask about it, but I had forgotten to come up with an excuse, so I just told the semi-truth.
“One of my tires blew so I had a tow truck take it to the garage. And don’t worry. I paid for everything. It will be ready in about a week.”
“I could have paid for it, Lyn.”
I shook my head. “It’s fine. My car, my payment.” My eyes found the clock and I realized that it was getting late. “I’m going to go read for a while.”
My dad leaned back in the chair and picked up the remote, flipping through the channels. “Alright. Love you.”
“Love you too,” I said as I climbed the stairs and went to my room.
I lie down on the bed and open my book, but my mind wasn’t processing the words. I couldn’t get my mind off of one thing. And that one thing happened to be a boy with the chocolate eyes and wavy hair.
Luke’s POV
After I left her house, I just sat in my car for a while before leaving. Exhaling deeply, I leaned back in the seat, my hands on the steering wheel and my head falling back. My eyes stared at the ceiling as I thought about everything.
I had opened up to Lyndsey a little more than I had wanted to tonight. Talking to her just felt so easy and simple. I could understand why James would want to be friends with her. I could see why anyone would want to be friends with her. She was one of those people that could get along with anyone. So why not Sarah?
It seemed to me that Sarah was the root of everyone’s problems. She was the one keeping people from things and setting boundaries and laws on everyone. I had a reasonable excuse as to why I let her give me regulations. I sighed angrily at the thought. I hated that she had so much power over me, but I didn’t want to underestimate her either; which I had done several times before. Sarah wasn’t afraid to use what she had. And she had everything she needed to ruin everything in a matter of seconds.
I slowly readjusted myself and started the car, turning the radio on low. I pulled out of the driveway and down the street. The farther away I got from her house, the more my chest ached. I had never felt it before, but I knew that there was something different about Lyndsey that made me feel this way. Something in her that made me me. She was one of the few people I had ever met who could tear down my shields in a matter of minutes. I had only known her a couple of days, but I felt like I had known her a lifetime. I knew I was harsh towards her at times, but I couldn’t let her know everything. I didn’t want her to get hurt. I sighed when I realized that, after meeting Lyndsey, I would never be the same person again.
