As I bounce repetitively to Nova's trot around the arena, I think back to last week when I tried to mount her and she threw me off. Jack, Alison and Janet never found out, and I have decided to keep it that way.

I've worked very hard with Nova this past week, training her for the upcoming show. Even though I can trot on Nova, she is still very sensitive with any sudden movements that I make. But I can't give up on her now that the competition is only a week away. The next step that I'll teach her another day will be a canter.

I cautiously dismount off Nova's back and lead her by the reins into the stable. Once I've untacked her and washed the sweat from her body, I place her in a paddock with Sharki. I lean on the wooden gate and watch them graze together happily before turning back towards the stable.

"Damien! You scared me!" I say, gasping.

"Sorry!" He says laughing.

"Did you just get back from the hospital today?" I question.

"Yeah, Janet just picked me up. I wanted to thank you for saving me when I fell off. If you weren't there I would've had to wait until Janet came out of the house and found me!"

"Don't worry about it," I reply.

"So how is it going training Nova? I heard that you are making great progress."

"Yeah I'm really enjoying training Nova, even though it's been harder than I expected."

"I always found it hard but once you train one horse, the next ones are a lot easier," he says. "If you need any help with Nova just tell me and I'll give you some advice."

"Thanks!" I reply gladly

I continue to walk back to the stable to put away my things and lock the tack room. Then I mount my bike and start pedalling down the driveway towards home.

......

I've nearly arrived at home when an ambulance passes me, it's alerting sirens buzzing in my ears. I wonder who could be hurt and what could have happened but soon turn my thoughts away. The siren noise disappears and I continue to pedal towards home.

When I arrive at the entrance to the driveway, I see the same flashing red lights that I just recently saw on the ambulance. I bike down the drive, my legs travel faster and faster on the pedals as I get more concerned about what has happened to either Jack or Alison. I stop the bike and jump off, throwing it onto the front lawn.

At first I see Alison standing next to the ambulance talking with the medic. Her eyes are red and puffy from crying and she continues to wipe the tears with her sleeve.

It's Jack, I think nervously.

I rapidly walk to where Alison and the medic are standing together.

"Alison whats happened?" I say curiously.

She doesn't say anything but puts her hands up to her eyes and starts to cry again.

"We think Jack has had a heart attack. Their doing tests on him now in the ambulance," the medic informs me seriously.

I don't say anything but turn to look over at the ambulance. I can only just see Jack's feet peeking out from the stretcher, and the two other medics that surround him.

"Ma'am would you like to come to the hospital with us?" The man says.

"Yes, of course," Alison says, her voice shaking.

They walk to the ambulance, get inside and drive away, leaving me standing on the front lawn by myself.
