The room was quiet, the sounds of Ashley's soft snores were accented kindly by the beeping of the heart monitor. Nurses had given up on sending Ashley home weeks ago. The hospital room had a shower and the attending night doctor made sure nobody bothered to wake him when he laid beside you in the hospital bed. Most nights he wouldn't actually be asleep, he just laid there looking with hollow eyes, playing back the night that made his mind swirl with emotion. Before he would begin to cry mindlessly he mumble to you. "Wake up Purdy girl." Little did he know, you heard every word. You could hear everything but you could not move or give any sign that you were still there. Inside your head you screamed, trapped within the confines of the brain that refused to show activity on any machine or monitor. Each time he cried, you wanted to reach out and hold him close to your chest. To stroke his hair, kiss his lips, anything! Though it was horrible to say, you even heard the pushy attending day doctor telling Ashley to put an end to this. "She'll never wake up... She's dead without those wires, save some money..." And every time you heard Ashley spit.

"Fuck off!" The police had stopped by many a time as well, having read the confession you wrote up before the attack. Nobody had been arrested by your Dad was suspected given his alibi was shaky at best. The boys had all come by, but Ashley wouldn't let them near. It was as if the only thing holding him together was the thought that if he was there long enough you'd finally be able to wake up. No matter how you tried, you could not will yourself to wake and give Ashley peace. You sighed internally as you heard the door creak open and footsteps echo. You knew that by now the day doc was in and probably gonna wake Ashley. "Just let my baby sleep... It's the only time his mind's at ease..." But instead of the rude awakening you were expecting to hear you heard someone fiddling with the machinery beside you and then a long wine that faded as your conscious mind began to die, your last thought before the inevitable silence was. "Ashley, don't let me die..."

There was a sharp pain and a horrid vibration through your body as someone cried out. "She's back! For the first time in months your eyes were open, looking up at a nurse who's voice you recognized as one who'd consoled your dear Ashley. Sitting up with unbelievable pain and stiffness you yanked the wires from your arms despite the ignored protests around you. Stumbling out of the bed and toward the door you were finally able to cry out. "Ashley!" The door opened and light flooded your vision as you stood shaky legged and exhausted. As you fell to the ground a pair of arms encased you. Without having to guess who it was you let your body go limp in the arms of your beloved Ashley. The only word that could roll off your unpracticed lips was "Ashley..."
