Even though they were so close to open ground they were still not safe the slavering monsters cut them off makig the mistake of allowing their peircing red eyes to be seen just ahead. The group turned and adjusted their course hoping to get away,but night was closing in. Darkness surrounded them and the dim glow of their nearly dead flashlights did nothing to hold off the impending night fall.
"We had better make camp here for the night" the guide said quietly so as not to tip off the beasts that their pray had stopped."we cant see and they" he pointed to the undergrowth"will probably attack when it gets a little later in the night unless we build a fire to keep them away"
"you must be joking" the more rational of the three survivors said"those things don't care about fire they'll attack regardless"he said. "besides we are almost to the cars"
"NO!" the guide replied sharply "rabid or not they fear fire and wont come near it we can make a ring around the clearing we'll all be protected for the night."
"fine but we should take shifts keeping the fire up" the previous feed's victim said. "perhaps I should introduce myself I am Ashton the short one over there is Violet, and the blonde is Mary " Ashton said pointing to his shaken companions in turn.Violet smiled starting to get back to whatever kind of normal was possible after what she had witnessed.
They started gathering firewood and drewsticks to see who took first watch. The hikers went first allowing the distressed trio to rest if they could.
ASHTON'S POV
I looked around the the clearing hoping that the guide's idea would work.
"Ash" violet whispered touching my shoulder
"yes" I said turning to her "what is it Violet? are you ok"
"I'm fine" she replied "you just looked worried dont you think the fire will work"
"I dont know Vi" I said. "they said it will but im just not sure it will hold those things"
we crawled into the tent the strangers had set for us and fell asleep before we hit the sleeping bags. I knew Mary wouldn't sleep she had always been a worry wart and after this she would probably snap. i was still surprised when she woke me up though.
she looked a little better than before and I wondered what was up.
"I know what they are" Mary said calmly.........
