(In case there was a glitch or you missed it in the description, this story will contain a homosexual relationship. I just want to make sure everyone's aware so no one gets upset. Thanks, and enjoy!)

I took a deep breath as I felt the sun on my face for the first time. All around me I heard 24 others taking their own deep sighs. I couldn't help but grin as I felt my team behind me, our solidarity reinforced by this new warmth on our skin. Finally something natural, not those awful team-building drills. Suddenly the red bleeding through my eyelids went black, and a coolness replaced the sun's gentle warmth. I peeped one eye open, and a familiar figure was silhouetted against the bright sunlight. I opened both eyes, and I could make out the scowl on the hulking mass of muscle's face."You are not here to have fun," he snarled. "You are here on a mission." I groaned and pulled a face at Agent Davids, our boss. Without a moment's pause, his palm collided with my cheek. With all his muscle and rage (though that's always a factor, this dude is always mad), the blow would have knocked anyone else to the ground. But my head only twisted to the side, the slap's sting so familiar it hardly even bothered me. I didn't even feel my team getting angry, only vaguely worried.
Not for me, of course, but for Agent Davids."Yeah, I'm gonna miss you too," I retorted, turning back towards him with a smirk. "No more taking your anger out on 15-year-olds for you." He only scowled harder and clenched his fists.
"Let's run over the mission one more time," he said in a slightly more irritated tone, if an increase was even possible.
"Blah, blah, blah," I interjected. "We got it. Trackers between the shoulderblades, communication stuff in the ears and cheeks, all surgically implanted," I puff out my chest and scrunch up my face, "'so don't even think about trying to take them out." I heard a few chuckles from behind me at that. I guess my angry growl impression was better than I thought.
"Okay miss know-it-all, if you know so much then tell me this: Why are you all being sent out?" he snapped. I paused, my posture returning to its normal slouch.
"Uhhhhh..." I stammered as Agent David's scowl eased up a little in his version of a laugh.
"We are being deployed to take down a rebel uprising of insurgents unhappy with our system of government!" piped up a voice from the back. One of my best friends stepped to my side. She had black hair shaved close to her head in the military fashion we all shared, almond-shaped dark eyes, and flawless ebony skin. Her strikingly beautiful face made me suddenly conscious of my light brown eyes of slightly different shapes, plain brown hair, and asymmetrical lips.
"Exactly right, Asset 4. Pay more attention next time, Asset 1. You are supposed to be the leader." Yep, those are the only names we have, 'Asset blah blahblah.' And yes, I'm the leader. I didn't really have any choice, I was bred for this. We were all bred for this."Remember what you were sent to do," Agent Davids muttered, towering over my short body. "We have agents on call to retrieve you, and tranquilizers built into your trackers to incapacitate you until they arrive."
"How do we know you won't use that to kill us?!" shouted a voice from the back. Without even turning around I knew it was Asset 14, a boy with dark hair, a hooked nose and bright blue eyes. He's known around the Facility for his fiery personality. Well, that and his crush on Asset 4. It was so painfully obvious it was almost funny.
"We only packed in enough to stun you!" Agent Davids shouted right back. "But even if it was a lethal dose, it wouldn't kill you lot. You were built to be immune to overdoses of tranquilizers, any and all poisons, and all heart conditions. You were built to be-"
"INDESTRUCTIBLE!" we all shouted, in varying intensities of mockery. Mine was probably the rudest. We'd heard this speech so many times in one form or another it got hard to just let it slip by. Even the shyest girl, Asset 24, a girl with big green eyes, freckles, and hair that was either brown or red (it was hard to tell with it shaved so close to her head.) joined in, her lips barely moving and her back straightening a bit further than her already perfect posture. Agent Davids bared his teeth and got that look in his eyes that I knew was an immense desire to grow 23 more arms to pound us all into feathery pulp. With a smirk, I spread out my tan wings, flecked with brown on the topsides. Behind me I heard a rustling as the rest of my team followed my lead. None of us are really sure about the science behind winged kids, but I think I overheard something about DNA once.
"I will contact you once you reach your destination!" shouted Agent Davids over 50 wings beating frantically. We took a few moments to get our bearings and simultaneously set off north, the direction that had been drilled into us for the last 3 years. We'd been trained in survival skills and combat all our lives, but only the past three years had we been aware of this first mission. As I soared, I smiled as I felt my unit's ecstasy at sun-warmed wings and fresh outside air seperating our feathers, a nice change from the stale air and flourescent lights of the wind tunnel back at the Facility. We all slowly fell silent as we realized we were all finally free. On a mission, sure, but free.
