About an hour had passed since Mrs. Evans had left me alone with my thoughts, but I still hadn't been able to wrap my finger about what she meant. Why would my appearance matter when I was meeting a few little boys. How old were they again?? Had anyone ever told me or..
It finally occured to me how little I knew about the next three months of my life. I looked out the guest room window, and saw golden fields and lucious green trees surrounding. I wouldn't call it a forest, or a farm, but whatever this place was it's amazing!! I don't have all that much of an idea of exactly where we are, but I do know it took me about fifteen minutes to get from the city to here on my bike, so it must still be in the county.
So far, I have discovered that the guest room has it's own personal bathroom, a walk-in closet, and a tv. As I smiled with satisfaction of having figured the guest room out, I walked to the end of the hall and trotted down the winding staircase.
"This is definelty not a poor persons' house.." I muttered to myself, admiring my reflection in the shining marble floors.
The front door opened and closed, and I was suddenly overcome with nervousness. What if the boys didn't like me?? How will I make them like me?? I could offer to take the boys into town and buy them candy.. Yeah, that would work. Kids love candy!!
With this plan worked out in my mind, I slowly made my way for the living room. What met my eyes, was the last thing I expected. What were four teenage boys doing here?? They all looked older than me..
Wait.
"A-are you the Evans boys??" I stammered, looking from boy to boy. The blonde one nodded at me, while the others were focusing on taking their shoes off.
"I'm Winston," the blonde said to me, flashing a million dollar smile while holding his hand out. I shook it, still in a daze.
"Hi, I'm... Claire," I said, trying to keep my focus on Winnston and not the other boys by the door, who were now removing their shirts.
"I'm Oliver," Another boy said, holding out his hand for me to shake. I shook it, smiling awkwardly, while trying not to rape him with my eyes. (; (Authors note: I know you would have done the same thing if you were in this situation, because these boys are fine!! So no judging Claire!! (: Lol)
"Alex," a guy with jet balck hair stated simply, still on one knee untying his grey converse.
All the other boys rolled their eyes at his oh-so-friendly-greeting. I laughed quietly at them, turning to the last boy who hadn't yet introduced himself. "I'm Ayden," he said, flipping his chestnut hair to the other side of his face. "And you're cute.."
I was taken aback at his suddenly flirty attitude, and found a light pink blush on my cheeks. I suddenly got a look from all the guys in the room that showed what they were all thinking; "She's so cute when she blushes!!" Of course, Alex immediately wiped the look off his face, while the other boys were still staring at me like I was a puppy.
"Any who.." I said, trying to remove the awkwardness from the room. "I'd like to know why I have to look after you guys..?"
"Because we can't be trusted," Winston and Ayden stated simultaneously, as if it were obvious.
"Well.. ok? But you all look older than me, so why should you need a younger babysitter?? I was expecting a bunch of six, seven eight year olds!! Not.." I trailed off, suddenly curious of their ages.
"We just turned fourteen last month," Ayden said, pointing to Winston and himself.
"Twins??" I asked, my whole face lighting up.
"Mhmm," Winston replied proudly. I nodded my head approvingly, turning to Oliver and pointing at him, which was my way of asking his age.
"Sixteen, as of..." I looked up at the ceiling, counting on his fingers. "Nine months ago."
I nodded, then turned to Alex, who was sitting on the floor staring up at me. I bent down to his level, and said in a mockingly teacher-like voice, "And how old are you, Alex??"
He paused, the corners of his lips twitching. Was he.. Holding back a smile??
"I'm this many!" he finally responded, holding up seven fingers. The other boys laughed, as I stood back up, shaking my head, smiling.
"He's seventeen," Winston told me, still smiling, though no longer laughing. I nodded, confusion eating me alive.
I looked at each boy, before asking a question I couldn't wrap my mind around. "Why didn't you mom tell me you were all.. all..."
"Older than you??" Alex asked, a smirk making it's way to his face.
"No! Ayden and Winston are not older than me!!" I defended myself, even though I knew that all the guys had probably thought I was maybe fourteen or so. I am pretty short for my age, I'll admit that much.
"Really??" Alex scoffed, while Oliver had an amused grin plastered on his face.
"Yes really!! I'm almost sixteen!" I stated, not realizing how stupid I sounded until the words had left my mouth. Alex was seventeen, a good year or so older than me.
"Oh, well, that makes all the difference in the world!!" Alex said, using mock sarcasm. "Meanwhile, I'm almost eighteen, and I don't give a shit."
"Well then.." I muttered, looking down at my feet and staring at my blue converse. Okay, so he's a good two years or so older than me. Big whoop, I'm still in charge, right??
I looked up at Oliver, while Alex walked out of the room. I looked behind all the boys at Alex, while he was walking down the hall and up the stairs. "Hey, where do you think you're going??" I asked, suddenly extremely annoyed with the dude.
"Shut up," he told me, right before I heard him slam his bedroom door upstairs.
I looked back to Oliver, noticing for the first time that he was more than a head taller than me. "Am I in charge, or am I just here??" I asked, a lump in my throat. The lump was probably there because absolutely nothing was going as I had planned, and it had only been about ten minutes.
"Let me put in this way," Ayden said, stepping next to Oliver. "You'll be cooking our dinner, and making sure we stay in line. You'll also be making sure we don't hurt eachother too bad, and are in bed by.." He paused and looked to his brothers.
"Was it ten??" Winston asked, both of the twins looking to Oliver for the final answer.
"Eleven, if we're not in bed by then, we sleep out back on the patio," Oliver stated. I guessed that he was the good child, I'm not sure about everyone else though..
"Are you the 'good child'??" I asked Oliver, too stupid to keep myself from asking.
"I suppose.." He said, looking to his brothers in question.
They both nodded, while Winston stepped in front of his brothers and said proudly, "I'm the brains.." We laughed, but I guess that fits. I could see him as the top of his class.
"And Ayden here is the trouble maker!!" Oliver said, messing up Ayden's hair in an older brother type of way.
Ayden looked up, and put a finger to his chin, smiling evilly. "Guilty as charged!" We all stood there and laughed at the kid. Even if this summer is already nothing like I had planned, it was already the best I've had since I was thirteen..
