When I got back to campus, I was exhausted. I went straight to my room, climbed into bed and switched on my laptop. With a quick glance at the calendar on the wall, I turned back to the computer screen and opened up my emails. A couple of them were from my professors and to my delight, one was from my grandmother.
I smiled. I had taught her how to send emails over the summer and every week since I moved into my dorm room, she would send me one.
It read:
Dear Lizzy Bear,
I missing you a lot. The house it is quiet. The outside it is cold. I know you are study a lot but I hope you are relax too. I watching tv a lot but I want to see you soon. Be safe and call to me when you can.
Loving you,
Eleanor
"What are you smiling at?"
I looked up and saw my roommate looking at me suspiciously from her side of the room. She had a smirk on her face, as if she'd caught me doing something scandalous.
"Just an email." I typed up a quick reply and clicked send.
"From your boyfriend?"
"Haley, why would I be emailing my boyfriend?"
"So you do have a boyfriend!" She made her way to my side of the room and plopped herself on my bed.
"Um no—that's not..."
She leaned over so that her forehead was leaning over my shoulder. "What's his name? Can I read the email?"
"Actually," I said, a wicked grin spreading on my face, "Her name is Eleanor." I watched her big blue eyes grow wide as she stared at me.
"No. Freaking. Way."
I laughed at her reaction. She put her hands on my shoulders and began shaking me.
"How could you not tell me? I'm your roommate!"
"Sorry, sorry," I said in between giggles. "Here, I'll let you read the email."
I opened the message again and turned the computer slightly so that we could both see the screen. Haley read the message and pursed her lips.
"What's the matter?" I asked.
"Um." She scrunched her eyebrows and looked at me. "Lizzy?"
"Yeah?"
"Is your girlfriend stupid?"
"No!" I feigned offense. "She's foreign."
"Oh."
I couldn't hold it in anymore so when I burst out laughing, Haley looked at me with the most confused expression on her face. That made me laugh more.
"What's so funny?" She looked offended.
"Nothing...I just..." I wiped the tears from my eyes. Man, that was a good laugh. "So me dating a girl doesn't bother you?"
Her expression softened. "No way!"
"Good to know."
I really meant that. It was a relief knowing that Haley didn't care who I dated—not that I was dating anyone at the moment. Still, it felt nice.
She put her arm around my shoulder. "Can I see a picture of her?"
I chuckled again as I pulled out my phone and scrolled through the photo gallery to find the one of me and my grandmother at the park. I was leaning my head on her shoulder and my mother had taken the picture.
