(This is dedicated to NekoKarasu , as she wanted to see it first. x3)
It had happened so suddenly. In fact, it happened so fast, by the time everyone was stashed up to "wait it out", half of England's population had been infected.
That was probably the reason Dan Howell was carrying around his only weapon- a small axe- and a backpack of necessities while sneaking around corners.
Now, when it comes to the apocalypse, usually you fear the undead beasts. While Dan fears those, too, he is far more afraid of humans. Or, maybe it's the idea of a companion. Maybe it's the idea of having someone to work with and care for, but then having them forcefully ripped from his life like every other human he's cared for.
Then, there is Phil Lester.
Phil is sporting a gun and a knife, usually only using the knife for kills, as the gun makes too much noise. He has only a bit of supplies left in his bag, because by the time he had gotten the courage to go anywhere, everything had been raided.
While Dan was steering clear of a friend, Phil was desperately looking for one. If he was going to survive, he'd need someone with him. For protection or just moral support, either would be nice.
Phil was scared. He was scared and alone. He hated being alone.
Dan was tough. He loved being alone, yet the longing idea of a friend was always there.
Had the horde not happened, they probably wouldn't have found out they weren't alone in the world. Maybe, just maybe, this could work.
***
~Phil's POV~It was a horde. A huge one, may I add. It's as if they all had a sort of plan to make a circle around the city and start to close in. I always had some theory they were being controlled by the government, even though it had supposedly "collapsed".
Eventually I was only able to see the ring of monsters that were around me. Or, it would of only been me if there wasn't this guy- probably around my age- in the little circle with me. Due to the undead starting to get closer together, we had ended up back-to-back. I knew it was coming, so I wasn't frightened when our backs touched, but he obviously was.
The kid probably jumped about three feet.
We exchanged looks and then focused on the creatures around us, when suddenly, they became very uninterested in us. They literally turned the other way and walked, as if they were being controlled. What if I was right? What if- That's enough, Phil. The government would be trying to stop them, not control them into rounding you up. Right?
Apparently the stranger had the same idea that I did, as we both darted for the same shelter. It was a small camper, with the door slightly open and in pretty good shape for the conditions we were in. He got there first and gave me a small exasperated look, before glancing to our surroundings and letting me in.
***
~Dan's POV~I have no idea why I held the door open for him, but I did. When he was in the camper with me, I quickly locked the door and started putting anything I could over windows. Luckily, there were a few blankets strewn everywhere, and once the stranger caught gist of what I was doing, he began so work quickly, also.
We didn't talk until we were finished with the windows.
The first thing we did ask each other were names, because referring to the man as things other than his name would have been a bit annoying. I learned his name was Phil, and he was actually a pretty decent, polite guy.
"So, Phil," I started, catching his attention. He had a flicker of hope in his eyes as I said his name, but it went away as I said what followed after. "When do you plan on leaving? As far as I'm concerned, this is my 'home'," I said, using air-quotes,"and I really don't plan on sharing it with you." I sound like a dick, but hey, what am I supposed to do when a stranger just appears in the middle of the apocalypse?
"Um, I-I actually was going to ask if you wanted to, um, join forces, kind of?" He stuttered, making this weird motion with his hands as to say 'join'. He looked so lost and lonely, I almost took pity on him. Then I realized that I'm just setting myself up- I really, really don't feel like being hurt again. After how my other... "Team" left me, I don't know how it would feel if I got so close to just one person, only to have them ripped away. What if he's different? Give him a chance, Da-
I need to stop thinking.
"Sorry, Phil. I don't 'join forces' with people." His bright blue eyes dimmed a bit. It actually hit something in me, apparently pretty fucking hard if I'm able to say,"But you can stay tonight." The thing is, is that I didn't even consciously do it. But I'll be damned if I didn't feel better about myself when his face lit up.
That doesn't mean anything. He is not staying with me.
"Where will I sleep?" I pulled out the couch.
We will not be partners.
"Are you going to sleep, too, Dan?" I nodded and started making a nest on the floor. We should be good for tonight, I boarded everything when I put blankets over the window.
He will not be my friend.
"You can lay beside me, if you want." He said, snuggling into his blankets. "'M cold. Body heat?"
I did not think of cute. We are not companions.
"Goodnight, Dan. It's much better. You're like a heater."
"Shut up and go to sleep."
...
We are not anything.
