Japanese Glossary

So I often get questioned a lot about some of the Japanese words I use in my books. So I've decided that instead of explaining them in each chapter, I'll just create a glossary for it. Here goes nothing!

Arigato- Thank you
Prefix- Domo
Suffix- Gozaimasu
Both more formal ways to say it

Ohayo- Good morning
Suffix- Gozaimasu
More formal way to say it

Oyasumi- Good night
Suffix- nasai
More formal way to say it

Konnichiwa- Hello

Yoroshiku- Nice to meet you/it's a pleasure to meet you/I hope we can get along.
Suffix- Gozaimasu
More formal way to say it

Uso- Lying/you've got to be kidding
Suffix- desho, tsuki, tsuke
Usotsuki- Liar
Usotsuke- Stop lying

Iya- No/I don't want it
Synonyms- Iye, Iyada

Doitashimashite- You're welcome

Sayonara- Good bye
Synonym- Ja ne- bye

Demo- But

San- Honorific, usually a formal one towards elders or someone you respect

Kun/Chan- Honorific, usually towards peers and people the same age as you.

Watashi/Boku/Ore- All forms of saying 'me' or 'I'
Watashi is usually said by girls and Boku and ore is usually boys.

Desu/Desuka- Way of talking formally, usually to people in a higher position than you. Like bosses and elders.

Daijoubu- It's okay/fine

Gomen- Sorry
Suffix- nasai
Synonym- Sunimasen (deshita)
More formal way of saying it.

Kouhai- Lower class men

Senpai- Upper class men

Sensei- Teacher/Doctor

Otou-san- Dad/Father
Suffix- sama
Can take of the O to make it less formal
Synonym- Chichiue

Okaa-san- Mom/Mother
Suffix- sama
Can take O off to make it less formal
Synonym- Hahaue

Onee-chan- Big sister
Suffixes- sama, san
Can take O off to make it less formal

Onii-chan- Big brother
Suffixes- sama, san
Can take O off to make it less formal

Imouto- Little sister

Ototo- Little brother

Sama- Honorific, someone you think really highly off or serve. Usually used for royalty and noblemen.

Oi- Hey!
Synonym- Kora

Kuso- Damn it, Shit

Yosh- Yeah!, Yes!

Tomodachi- Friends

Kazoku- Family

Gakkō(u)- School

Shigouto- Work

Matte- Wait
Prefix- Chotto (wait a second)
Suffix- kudasai (more formal)

Hajimemashite (ta)- Hello/first time meeting you
