 ~Unknown POV~

Every muscle in my body was burning. My breath came out in short gasps. My legs were struggling to keep going, begging for me to stop. Fear kept the adrenaline going, but as the numbness began to fade and replacing it was pain, giving up just seemed like the right decision. At some point, I dont remember when, my run slowed to a jog and then to a sluggish walk. My sweaty hands ran along the wall, trying to keep my balance. The teal scrubs I wore clung to my body, threatening to suffocate me. My les tremebled as the last of the adrenaline wore off and they just gave ouy. I hit the ground hard, my knees cracking as I landed.

"Keep running, you haven't finished." Voices. It's those damn Lab Coats. They had me running through this damn maze all day . . . well, at least I think. I can never really tell whether it's day or night in this place. Anyway, back on topic. This is the billionth time that had me running through this maze. Each time I'd complete it, they'd change it and it would be more difficult than the one before. I had to finish each one earlier than the one before.

As the hours ticked by, my energy was slipping away and at some point, they strapped a small device around my ankle that would shock me everytime I tried to stop and take a breather. Shockingly enough, they didnt light me up like a Christmas tree this time. Instead, about three Lab Coats walked in, two of them were holding clip boards while the third held a tray full of, oh yes! Cups of deliciously refreshing water. Attempting to stand up and bolt for the water, I slipped and fell forward. I couldn’t feel my legs.

“She’s done. She’s won’t be able to walk if we continue to push her this way,” said one to the other.

“It’s important that we push her to the very limits. Her limits surpass the other experiments. How incredible how she is able to find her way through a maze in mere minutes,” replied the second. He then turned to the one with the tray and pointed in my direction. Without a word, the third person walked over and knelt before me, handing me a cup full of ice cold water. Without the least bit of hesitation, I grabbed it with a trembling hand and chugged that thing like no freaking tomorrow. Done with one, I reached for a second, then a third and a fourth. Thirst, not fully quenched, but enough to hold me, I got up on my hands and knees. I looked up at one of the Lab Coats only for one of them to reach down and grab me by my long white hair and lifted my head so I could look him straight in his face.

“It’s important that you attempt to push yourself to the point of breaking down. I’d be very disappointed if you failed us . . . me, my little protégé,” he smiled a sadistic grin that would send a shiver down the spine of any person. He had a grey and long mustache that curled up like some kind of old time super villain. Along with that, he had a longish beard that ended in a point. Other than that, he was completely bald. On his face was a pair of glasses with circular lenses that gave out a bright glare if caught in the light. Oh yeah, this guy gave even the strongest person the creeps. “Would you kindly escort my little dove back to her room?” he ordered to two bulky figures standing not too far away . . . Erasers. Oh lovely, just lovely. Instead of saying anything in response, they growled and grabbed me by the arms and dragged me to my cell.

The name’s Cinder. The Lab Coats here tend to call all of us experiments by some kind of number. I never really took a liking to mine so I named myself, as did many others. My name came to mind one day when I sat in my cage, staring off into space. It’s not like I had anything else to do. My skin was slightly tan and my hair was a vibrant white with slightly red tips. My eyes were a rose like color, not really pink, but also, not really red. Maybe a mix of the two? Let’s see, am I forgetting anything else? Oh yeah, my wings. Yep, I said it, wings. They were the same color as my hair only at the top then the color faded to a salmon like pink and then bright red at the tips. Oh yeah, my wings totally rock those colors . . . anyway, I’m going off topic. This place, the School is basically Hell on Earth. Hard to believe this place wasn’t shut down, but I highly doubt that anyone outside this place knows what really goes on down here. These Lab Coats (yeah, that’s what we call them, we could care less whether they’re female or male or their names) experiment with human and animal DNA, combining them and making a whole new bread or species. They call me an Avian-Hybrid, but I’m also different from the others. The ones that escaped this horrid place, the Flock, are 98% human, 2% bird. I, along with a hand full of others, are different by a mere 1%. We are 97% human, 2% bird (or some other animal) and 1% other. The other is random, basically gives us an extra kick. We aren’t sure of what that really is; it varies from each of us. What I do know though, is that they created it and injected it into us at the same time as the animal DNA. Most don’t usually survive since it’s still new, I guess, and those poor souls die before they realize what hit them. It’s a horrible and painful death, I’ve seen it happen only once and I really wished I hadn’t. There was blood everywhere as the Lab Coats dragged the body away. I’d rather not remember right now.
