Chapter Six: Santa Monica

Why the hell am I in Santa Monica Beach? We spent thirty minutes to go to a beach far far away when we had a beach back home.

But then I had noticed the different scenery.

There was a mini amusement park. The ferris wheel wasn't so large, but it was noticeable from miles away. A light sound wave of music had flown in as Cyan and I stepped out of the car. I stood there thinking to myself: Cyan has no power over me. Why, oh, why did I make friends with him.

The sidewalks were filled with people as well as the beach. Had this worried me a little? Maybe. I totally fought myself to get comfortable with other humans.

"You know," Cyan ran his hand through his dark hair. His eyes seemed brighter. Was he happier? "You can take your apron off."

I tilted my head, "Why?"

"I used some of my magic to convice Kyle that you deserved the rest of the day off," Cyan smirked and watched me untie my apron. I tossed it through the car window and I pulled my hairband off. I shook my hair. Let's look a little bit more beach-y. Cyan took a large towel from the trunk .

He quickly went toward the sand. He looked awkward trotting in closed-toe shoes in the sand as well as I. He laid down the towel and spread it across in front of the waves. He patted the empty space next to him. I sat there and smoothed out my skirt. Out of all the days, I had to wear a freaking skirt.

"I feel so calm here," Cyan breathed and laid back. I remained sitting. I turned my body toward him.

"Why Santa Monica?" I asked him.

He smiled, but when he did, he paid attention to the sky. I directed my eyes there as well.

"My mom would take me here every other weekend."

His mother? Cyan usually never revealed anything about his personal life. He was mysterious that way, but when he spoke about his mother, his expression became serious in a light way. For a moment, he looked like he was about to break. What ever happened to her?

"She's such a business women. I never see here. Maybe here and there around the holidays. She's always traveling and doing work. She's addicted," he read my mind.

"Oh," I said quietly.

"Being the supervisor of a mega-corp is tough, I guess."

I nodded. What was I supposed to say?

After a few seconds of sheer silence, Cyan propped himself up and shook his head. "No."

"Huh?"

"Just, no." he said as he got up. He lend me a hand and assisted me up, "We're here to be cheerful teens. Let's do something."

"Uh, okay," I hesitated. Worriedly, I looked at him, "What should we do?"

His eyes shot at the mini amusement park. His smile grew and he looked up at me. He picked up the towel and threw it over his broad shoulders. "Let's race! Whoever reaches the amusement park last buys the winner ice cream."

I looked at the distance from where we were and the park. I calculated how far it was and it was too far.

I swear, Cyan can be a child sometimes. I sighed and agreed.

"Okay! One...twooo...threee!"

A few minutes later, I was wanting to call a respiratory therapist and maybe a podiatrist. Cyan had beat me fair and square (he was ahead three feet the whole race).

"Uh...yeah, I'm a little worried about you," Cyan stretched and laughed. This guy.

"Whatever. Let's just get some ice cream," I rolled my eyes.

Slowly walking, we reached the confession stand. I picked myself a waffle cup of M&M's ice cream.

Cyan picked, a triple scoop of strawberry ice cream with sprinkles.

"I'm paying for this?" I laughed and pointed at his cone.

"What? It's so good." He licked the top.

I shook my head, paid the cashier, and started to laugh some more.  It was surely a fact that Cyan was somewhat young- very young -at heart.

"You're such a child."

"No, I am not," he then flashed a serious face. "Growing up sucks."

And it sure did.
