After surfacing and scouting out the area around the exit they deduced that they were about a mile away from the compound. The downpour of rain hadn't settled even after the hours of digging, the ground had almost turned to swamp from the expansive amount of water falling from the sky. This would make the journey farther away from the compound very difficult. They would have to be careful about sinkholes and avalanches as they maneuvered through the mountains surrounding them. There would be no way to avoid the mountains. "So what are your guys names?" Issac asked the group as he stepped out of the power armor. "My name is John, and this is James, Patrick, and Sam. We fought in the war together but were captured by the enemy. We've stuck together ever since." He answered. "How do you think we should navigate through these mountains?" "Well it doesn't look like we're going to be able to go over them, and these batteries keeping that suit running are going to die anytime."
Almost as if on cue the power armor shut down. Draining the batteries of the helmets completely. "Well what are we going to do now?" Said Patrick. "There must be a way out. Remember they brought us in using a vehicle, there has to be a tunnel or an entrance large enough for a car to fit through." Said Issac. "Ok, then I guess that's what we'll do. I also noticed that outside of the compound walls are storage rooms. I'm not sure what they contain but whatever it is will probably help us out." Sam responded. "We'll have to wait till night so that we can get past the watch towers." "Okay that sounds like a plan!" Issac confirmed.
It's dark and the fire has started to die down, the others are asleep but Issac is wide awake, being put on watch duty sucks no matter what way you put it. "This can't be real" he says to himself, just then there's a rustle in the bushes surrounding their camp. "Who's there?" He says in a low whisper as he approaches the bush. As he moves the bushes back immediately scolding himself for being so on edge. Behind the bush lay a tiny field mouse.
After going back to his makeshift post on a stump covered by a few bushes he realized that this would be the perfect time to leave. Looking back to his companions on this adventure he contemplated how he would fare by himself. Immediately brushing away the thought he strode over and shook them all awake. "It's time to move" he says. Getting a response of a few nods, "pack up and move out." On their way to the compound they hear sirens in the distance. "What's going on?" John asked. "It's not our problem." Issac answered. As they got closer they realized the spotlights had been abandoned. In a sprint they hustled to the cold stone wall of the compound pressing their bodies flat against it and quickly moving to the sheds. Usually guarded the post was left abandoned. "This must be a pretty big deal." said Patrick. "Like I said it's not our problem." As they opened the garage of the shed they gasped in realization at what they had found.
It looked like a dune buggy, four large overinflated wheels and a frame of just a roll cage. "Boys we hit the jackpot!" Exclaimed John as he grabbed the keys off one of the rusting shelves. As they piled into the car they heard a loud wail outside as if someone had been eaten alive. The wailing wouldn't stop, "What the hell is going on" Isaac said in a shaky voice. Issac taking the wheel, stepped on the pedal while yelling "Never driven before but there's always a first!" As they sped off towards the front of the compound. What they saw would be stuck in their minds for the rest of their godforsaken lives. Quickly dodging a man that was right out in the open they skidded to a halt and looked around. All they saw was pure carnage, nothing could have prepared them for this. People crying and screaming as these things ripped through their chests as they convulsed on the grounds. These things were barely humanoid and just looking at them would make you want to vomit. From the looks of it the compound had fallen only a while ago. The main entrance had been ripped open and it looked as if they had just poured inside and taken the compound. The only survivors looked as if the had hidden themselves away in one of the watchtowers occasionally firing shots at the disgusting figures.
"Let's get out of here." Sam stuttered. "Alright let's just go" said Isaac as he pulled away through the carnage and onto a trail that looked like it had been driven multiple times using these cars, the tread marks looked almost identical. As they drove through the underbrush it got eerily quiet, all they heard was the humming of the engine. Suddenly something burst from the brush grabbing Sam and taking him under the wheel, as they looked back they realized it was one of Them. It was so disfigured it looked as if it's head wasn't on correctly, as it started to get up they realized it was going to feast on Sam. Quickly turning the car and barely missing a tree in the process Isaac headed straight for the thing that was about to kill Sam. Knowing that if the thing would stay where it was that he would kill it and Sam would pass under the vehicle he stomped on the gas and charged straight for it. As the car smashed into its head black blood smeared all over the front of the car partially covering Isaac, quickly realizing the others had heard the ruckus they picked up Sam and sped off to the tunnel to make their escape.
