Prologue
"The Oracle of Delphi is dead."
"I know that. You don't have to remind me every five minutes."
Three tall, slender beings strolled down the hallway of an administration building. Their long, brown hair flowed behind them, matched in radiance by their olive-toned skin. Each wore a silk tunic: one jade, one peach and one turquoise.
The woman in the turquoise tunic shook her head. "Then remind me again why we're here," she said, her voice bitter.
The woman in the jade tunic sighed. "We are here because of the letter."
"A letter that came from the Oracle, who has been dead for eleven years."
"Urania, you did not have to come. I gave you the option to help, to which you freely agreed. So please, help us or leave us. Clio and I can take care of this with Erato and Thalia."
"Calliope, I said I would help, and that is what I will do. I just cannot understand why you feel obligated to carry out the requests of a letter you received eleven years ago. Muses inspire works of art. They do not perform secret operations."
Calliope's face was hard. "When the Oracle of Delphi gives you a task, you complete it. I will not disobey someone who can see into the future."
The woman in the peach tunic spoke up. "But why would the Oracle, on her deathbed, go to great lengths to ensure that five thirteen-year-old mortals get admitted into a high school?"
"Clio, she said that if they get accepted into the academy, it may ultimately save one of their lives," Calliope explained.
"She foresaw one of their deaths?" asked Clio.
"I assume so."
"She did not tell you?" Urania asked, stunned.
"The letter only said that in eleven years, we must make sure that these five girls gain admittance into Odyssey Academy. One of their lives may depend on it," said Calliope.
"Humans pass into the afterlife every day. Why does the Oracle care if this specific child lives or dies? Better yet, why do you care, Calliope?" asked Urania.
Calliope was silent.
"You know something you're not telling us!" Urania exclaimed.
"Didn't the Oracle send you two letters?" asked Clio.
"Yes, but the second one is not for us. I have to deliver it in four more years," said Calliope.
"But you read it," said Urania. "What did the letter say about this child?"
"Do not test me," Calliope growled. "If you have reservations about completing the task, leave."
Urania backed down.
"Who are the five girls?" asked Clio. "My charge is Colleen Benton, but who are the other four?"
