"We're almost there, Dylan. Your father has been waiting for this for years." My mother responded to Dylan as he was slouching in the car. My father always had some convoluted plan going on in his head. My father, Fredrick Paloto had a big surprise for my brother, Dylan and I. My mom, Mary Anne Paloto was driving us to his big "surprise." She told us our dad was already there waiting at the surprise. My father worked at for a realty company and hated it but ever since he had this "surprise", he seemed very positive and excited. I was happy for him, but also a tad nervous about this surprise. He never made a big deal out of things, besides this. Anyways, it seemed we were less than five minutes away from the surprise. My brother and I grabbed our coats off of the car carpet into our laps. I stared at the window then began to lean forward against the car seatbelt. I wanted to find my dad outside but I couldn't spot him yet. It was raining and somewhat cold so he could be inside waiting for us.
I looked over at Dylan and rolled my eyes. He didn't have a care in the world about what was going on. He was just swiping through his social media and liking every post of a cute girl. We soon began to slow down as we turned into a parking garage. I unbuckled my seatbelt and began to prepare myself for this "surprise." I looked down at my phone then back outside the window. We were in a large city, called "Hummings Landing." The city was very modern and clean. It was about half an hour away from our hometown.
"Well, we're here! Get your coats on because we have to walk a little ways down." My mom thought it was so cold outside so Dylan and I had to bring our thick winter coats even though it was only 45 degrees outside. I guess my mom thought if we were walking around we would get cold and die of hypothermia or something. The parking lot was fairly big but it was pretty packed. Luckily it was around 5:30 so some people got off of work and would be heading home to their families or something. Dylan looked over at me smiling nervously as I let out a sigh. Who knew what to come?
We opened our doors and looked over at our mom who had a huge grin on her face. We shut our doors then quickly put our coats on. Our mom locked the car up and starting walking over to the elevator. Her high heel clicks echoed loudly through the lot. She was luckily in on the surprise but still seemed anxious about it.
"So we're on level 2A, okay? We wouldn't want to get lost in this busy city not that it's dangerous or anything. Actually this city is really safe and beautiful. The shops around here are so cute and that café looked like it had some really good muffins, didn't you think so?" My mother said in an overly positive voice.
"Wait, are we going to move here or something?" Dylan asked. I smiled at him as my mom shook her head.
"No, I'm just saying this city is really nice. Capersville is nice too, it is just it doesn't have that many places to eat or shop. "
"Hey you can eat at 7 Eleven and shop for some bait at Larry's." Dylan joked. He was a lot more talkative once he got off his phone. My mom sighed as she got to the elevator. She pressed 1 and stood waiting anxiously.
"Where's dad?" I asked as we entered the elevator. The elevator was surprisingly big. I walked over to the glass elevator wall; my face was pressed up against it staring down at the street.
"He's at the special place. Oh I hope I didn't ruin it!" My mom replied looking over at me. Her response didn't help at all but I was going to find him soon enough. The elevator dinged as the doors opened out. We followed our mom as she opened the door to the street. The area was actually fairly nice. We walked among the shops as I glanced at each on. They were all little boutiques with quirky names and pretty colors. I looked forward to make sure I wasn't too far behind but then I saw dad. I waved at him as he ran over to us. He gave mom a kiss then hugged Dylan and I.
"Well, come with me and I will show you the surprise. It's just up one more block." We walked up the street as he smiled ever so happily. He walked in front of us then ran up the "surprise." I starting speed walking making sure I didn't bump into anyone. I turned to left and saw it. It was a humongous building. It was two stories high with it going spreading a mile. What was this if it was not a house to live in?
"What do you think of it?" My dad asked as Dylan and I stared at it. I now knew what the surprise was just not what it was for. Was this a vacation home or what? I wouldn't really mind considering the size of it. We could all have our own rooms and our very own living room and still have 20 rooms available. It also was really beautiful with the pastel colors and such but the size was overwhelming. I looked over at my parents as they chatting to each other and giggling every two seconds.
"So what's it's for? I thought this wasn't our new house?" I questioned as I straightened my coat. My dad beamed when I asked him as he walked over to Dylan and I. The rain began to become a shower instead of just a drizzle. My brown hair swayed in the wind covering my blue eyes.
"So this placed is where I work from now on. I saw it in my realty files and it looked wonderful." My dad responded looking back at the house.
"What job are you talking about? It's an empty building." I said confused.
"Come inside and I'll show you." My dad replied as he ran to the house. I rolled my eyes wondering what he got himself into.
"Look at this. Viola!" He said putting his hands out like Vanna White. It was a metal sign that was excellently painted. I then began to read the sign. "The Paloto Hotel."
