I quickly packed my bags, throwing out the dirty clothes, taking some new out of the closet. After I had speed-packed, I searched the letter, and found something written on the back of the paper, which I had sworn was not there before. It read,
"Erica, you may or may not see your family again. The details are hard to explain, but at the end of your years at Ebony School, you'll be given a choice. Go back to home, or stay at the school. "
I didn't have to give it a second thought. I would obviously come home right? Then, I got a feeling of dread come over me. What if this was all a hoax. Some stupid kid had put that letter in there just to fool someone as stupid as me...But no!, I thought, The brick really sunk back into the wall like it had never been disturbed. It can't be fake. I thought quickly, and decided how I was going to say goodbye.
"Mom? Dad?", I knocked on their door gently. "Come on in.", I heard my mom say. I took a deep breath, tried to look as casual as possible, and opened the door. "Hey. I...I just wanted to say goodnight.", I said, smiling shakily. "Oh. Haven't had one of these in a while have we?", my dad grinned at my mom, then reached to embrace me in a bear hug. "Love you sweetie.", he said, kissing the top of my head lightly. Mom was next. "Love you ErBear.", she said, smiling. She had just used my nickname that hadn't been used in...forever. "Kay. Goodnight.", I turned, heading towards the door. And goodbye, I thought, feeling sadness sweep over me.
I hurried to Shanon's room next. She sat on her bed, staring at her phone, like usual. "Hey.", I said, quietly. "Huh?", she glanced up then quickly back down as her phone buzzed. "Iwantedtosaygoodnight.", I said quickly, feeling awkward. She just looked at me, puzzled. "What?" "I...you heard me!", I smiled then launched myself at her, laughing and trying to hide the lump in my throat. "Ok. Yeah. Um, goodnight.", she said, not taking her eyes off her phone, even after I basically belly-flopped her.
"Hey. Uh Jake?", I knocked on his door. It opened. He was playing some video game on his mini TV he had in his room. He didn't say anything. "Jake?", I said again. "Huh? Yeah?", he said, still not looking at me. "Wanted to say goodnight.", I said. "Oh. yeah. Night.", he muttered, still focused on his game. Well, that was good enough. I thought, as I walked out of his room, and shut the door quietly behind.
