Chapter Five Unusual Sounds

Vern found four sticks so we could cook our hamburgers. We got around the fire in a circle. "Hey Verno you may wanna turn your hamburger over." Chris said. "No I like it this way." Vern replied. "Fine."

The next thing we knew Vern's hamburger was on the ground. "Guys that's not funny! What am I gonna eat?" said Vern worriedly. "Maybe you could eat your dick!" Gordie said. "It'd be a small meal!" Chris added.

We all laughed and I gave Vern some more hamburger meat to cook. For dessert the guys lite up a smoke. Chris offered me one but I declined. I wasn't much of a smoker. I just wanted to enjoy the warmth of the fire.

"What do you think high school will be like?" Vern asked. "With Johnny as a senior, horrible." answered Chris. "At least we don't have to put up with him for three years." I said. "True. But hey we'll have to put up with him on the streets and school." Gordie replied. "I think I'm gonna get some sleep." I said then yawned.

I walked over to Vern and gave him a goodnight kiss on the cheek. I went over to Gordie and forced him to let me kiss his cheek. When I went over to Chris, well that's another story. I walked slowly towards Chris. He knew I'd kissed Vern and Gordie so I'm sure he knew he was next.

"Hi" I whispered when we were face to face. He smiled and I put my head on his chest, my arms around his waist. He looked surprised but he didn't seen like he cared because he put his arms around my shoulders. We stayed in the hug for at least a minute. I let go of his waist and took a step back. "Night" Chris said.

I went into my sleeping bag and was just getting ready to fall asleep when I heard a howl. "What was that???" I heard Vern say. "Probably a ghost." Gordie said spookily. I didn't see anything but I assumed Vern flinched because I heard Gordie say, "two for flinching."

The howl came again. I heard the sound of someone loading a gun. "Where'd ya get that?" Vern's voice said. "Got it from my old man. He won't even know its gone." He whispered. It wasn't Vern because he asked the question. It wasn't Gordie because he didn't take a gun with him.

Chris was the one with the gun. I felt icky inside. Instead of speaking up I continued to pretend I was asleep. The howl came again. "I promise I won't read dirty magazines. I promise I won't say bad swears. I promise to eat all my veggies." Vern said revealing more of his scardy cat inside him.

One last time I heard the howl. "Uh m-m-maybe we should stand guard." Vern suggested.
