Prologue

Louis and Harry's relationship was like a piece of rope. It was constantly being pulled out, twisted, tied, and passed around until everybody had their say on how it should be.

Their band mates wanted their relationship to be secret, but not hidden. The boys knew that Louis and Harry loved each other and that it wasn't just some fling that would mess up their band in anyway. They wanted the rope to be left alone and let people make what they want of it.

Their mothers wanted them to tell everyone they were dating. Neither wanted their son to feel ashamed or have to struggle to hide their true feelings. Anne and Johannah just wanted their sons to be able to be with each other. They wanted the rope to be straight and narrow.

Their fans were divided. Half of the fans thought the rope didn't even exist. They thought Louis and Harry were both straight, definitely not dating, and they hated when people brought it up. These fans wanted to burn the rope and let it die.

The other half wanted the rope to be spread across the world. They wanted Louis and Harry to make sex tapes and kiss on camera and love each other openly. They didn't want any restrictions. Those fans wanted to cut the rope up and share it to everyone.

Their management wanted to get rid of all of their love. They wanted them to not sit together in interviews, they didn't want pictures of just the two of them, they didn't want their idea of the perfect boy band ruined because of two gay people. They wanted to shove the rope as far into the closet as possible; figuratively and literally.

Louis and Harry, though, they just wanted to play with the rope. They wanted to rebel, Louis more so than Harry. He wanted to sneak make-out sessions in closets at photoshoots, and make Harry scream his name on road trips, and tweet at him in ways it was obvious they were in love.

Harry hated the rope more than Louis, though. The rope hurt him. He didn't want to hide. He's an open-minded person, and having to hide his pansexuality and his gender bending hurt him more than he could explain. But he didn't want to ruin the band for the other boys.

Harry never liked restrictions, except in the bedroom. When Louis tied him down with ropes and chains, commanding he do what he say and not argue, that was the only time he liked being told what to do.

You could say they had a love-hate relationship with ropes.
