My name is Calum Hood I am seventeen years old, and I'm blind. I used to live in Australia and soon moved after, I was the age of three when my mother found out I was blind. I remember it clearly I saw cartoons blurry and my food was fading right in front of my eyes. At the age of five I started kindergarten, I remember I wasn't like the normal kids. I would never go outside to play or be in the class with the other kids; and I definitely had different people around me. At the age of seven I was in second grade and that's where I met my best friend Luke, who yes is still  my best friend till this day.

I still remember exactly how we met it didn't exactly happen like two average seven year olds would meet, like in the playground at recess and share each others toys or in the classroom asking to borrow from his 64 crayon box. I was forced to meet Luke and at first I was shy I mean who wouldn't I'm a seven year old meeting a stranger and I'm blind, yes I will use that excuse. It was the most awkward meeting.

"Hi I'm Luke Hemmings" he shyly waved. I stared blankly at him we were facing each other and I didn't know what to do or say. "Ehm, hi I'm Calum Hood" that's what you're suppose to say right? "I like your shirt" he blurted out after a long period of silence. "Thanks, I'm not quite sure what's on it really" I answered truthfully not knowing what my mother had decided for me this morning."It's a transformers shirt" he said I placed my hand on my chest feeling the material on the pads of my fingertips "It's soft" I said and he let out a small laugh.

"Wanna play?"

From that point on we were unbreakable, he was the penut butter and I was the jelly. I hate penut butter. Soon after that came middle school where everything went to hell, at the age of twelve I was able to get around more and I was able to use my other senses to help me live a better and normal life. It all happened one day before lunch at recess Luke and I were doing our usual which was a little advance for seven graders, but a boy can dream.

"Mmm...what color is the soil in the flowers Mrs.Griffin uses for class?" I ask as we lay under the tree waiting for the lunch bell, the usual. I hear him hum for a bit "That's hard to explain, it has like foam circles and it's dark with some green" I nod at his response still not being able to picture how soil looks like "Soil is hard to imagine" I sigh and sit up. "Sorry Cal I tried maybe we can ask your mom to buy some" I scoffed at him "Sure she'll buy some" I can hear shuffling and no more sounds "Luke? Are you still there" I hate these types of moments I hate the silence I feel all alone all I hear is the kids playing in the playground it's like no one is with you when you really need them. "Luke?" I called again "Hey I'm back sorry the guys from Mrs.Stuart's class asked me if I want to sit with them at lunch" he said and sat down next to me again.

"It's okay don't worry about it" I hear silence again, just great. "Sorry Cal I'm going to sit with them is that Okay?" I hated when he asked that he's doing it out of pity, sometimes I think he does everything out of pity. I can't help it I'm blind I wasn't born this way it just happened. "It's fine Luke go with your friends I'll be fine I'll have lunch with Mrs.Griffin, again." I hear him stand up and call his so called friends over and they all came running "Guys this is my best friend Calum Hood" I stood up and waved I'm a natural shy person so I don't talk much. "Aren't you that blind kid from Mrs.Griffin class?" I nodded "That's me" they all started laughing and laughing.

"What's so funny?" I asked backing up against the tree feeling my anxiety build up as the seconds go by "You're a loser Hood" they all laughed again "Come on guys leave him alone" I heard Luke defend me I'm glad I have him as a friend but he's the one who brought them over. "I-I am not" I stuttered, this happened often when I'm nervous or scared. "Loser!" they started "You're an idiot!" the continued "You shouldn't have been born" they kept going and going and as they kept going the years built up on my eyes and tickled down my cheek.

Luckly Mrs.Griffin came to the rescue and took me inside in that period of time Luke barely hung out with me later in eight grade he showed up at my house crying. "I'm sorry I was a jerk Calum, you really are my only true friend" apparently that had trashed his bike and threw him in the pool. "Luke you're my best friend so I forgive you" he sniffed "really? After everything I did through seventh and most of eight grade" I smiled and laughed "Yes Luke as long as you aren't a jerk anymore and stop giving me reasons why I shouldn't forgive you and hopefully you know who your true friends are" I smiled at him sincerly "I know now" he smiled back, I think.

Then later I graduated middle school and as a gift my mum got me a guide dog, my therapist has been recomending it since the fifth grade but she never approved. He is a German Shepard named RJ and he's a cuddly little thing and an annoying one too. Freshman year was a bum I had an assistant help me through school RJ never left my side, it was also the year I found out about the schools soccer team it was extraordinary I loved the way Luke talked to me about soccer. Of course I never watched it but the idea of it was fascinating.

Sophomore year came and things ran more smoothly Luke joined the soccer team telling me that he will make me a proud dad. He's still an idiot. He soon became captain of the soccer team second semester of sophmore year which was amazeballs. Junior year came it everything changes the bullying had become worst and I couldn't stand it so I moved schools. I moved to the Benjamin Stones High School, and let me tell you it was the lowest ranked school in our city. I was ready for a new start Luke had convinced his parents to move schools with me so I wouldn't be alone and thankfully they let him.

Soon after that we started to get settled in everyone was nice and really helpful the secretary there had a really nice voice she must've been really pretty. At the office they told us Luke wouldn't be able to help me around a school so they picked another kid named Ashton Irwin apparently he's trying to get into a really good college and this will help him. I sat in the principles office with my mum Luke had already left for his first day now I was waiting for mine to begging. The door swung open revealing a middle aged woman with some jeans that looked like they came out of an 80s movie and a school shirt that said 'Go Stallions' weird. "Good morning" she greeted us "Good morning" my mum and I said in unison. "Welcome to Benjamin Stones, Ashton should be here shortly to help you" she announced as a petted RJ's head "They said it was fine for my guide dog right?" I heard shuffling I think she might have sat down finally "Yes it's completely fine we already got the papers and the ok from the school board" perfect. Now all we had to do is wait for that Ashton guy to show me around for a few days before RJ remembered the school and off on my own; but the thing is about me I'm blind but I hate getting help from strangers it must be my anxiety because I just dont like it at all. Knock knock. Someone's at the door.

"Good morning I'm here for the new student?" an Australian accent swam through my eardrums. "Good morning Ashton this is Calum Hood and his mother you will be helping him for a few days" I smiled not knowing of he was looking at me "Hi" I managed to squeak out "Hey bro cool dog" he said in that thick accent "Thanks."

"So are you ready to meet out school?"

"Nope"
