I woke the next morning to the feeling of a certain someone smelling my hair. I looked over my shoulder at Link with a 'why the hell are you smelling my hair?' look. Link blushed bright red when he noticed I was awake and looking at him. He pulled his face away from my hair and mumbled under his breath something about me smelling like cherry blossoms. I just blinked twice at him and squirmed around as my way of saying 'get up and let go.' He did so and sat up yawning and stretching. I hopped up to my feet and stretched like a cat on all fours. I felt my back crack all the way from my neck down to above my tail and practically moaned. It freaking orgasmic. I yawned to cover up the moan then rubbed my eyes a bit. Link was gathering up his stuff and supplies into his army backpack I found for him while we were in the city. I grabbed the canteens and headed out of the den and up to the creek. We need the water. I crouched down at the edge of the creek and filled both canteens to the brim with clear fresh water. Closing the canteens tight I headed back to the den and crawled inside. Link looked at me from over his shoulder and saw the canteens dripping with water. He smiled and took the canteens as I handed them to him and placed them in the backpack. I crawled out of the den and waited for him to finish up the packing. While I waited I scanned around the general area carefully. The air was still but whenever a slight breeze blew I could feel the temperature slowly dropping. 'I really hope it doesn't start snowing any time soon.' I thought to myself right as Link crawled out of the den.
"Lets go. It's cold." Link stated the obvious earning a scoff from me. We started towards the road after grabbing a much needed drink from the creek before we left the area. When we got back on the road we headed west which is the direction of the safe zone. It was a quiet day which was nice. Peace and quiet was a godsend nowadays. Link had on a heavy winter jacket made of vegan leather with a turtle neck under it. He was wearing some jeans and combat boots. I had to get him clothes for the winter otherwise he would freeze to death. He has spare clothes despite having said he would be fine without them. I had an argument with him about that and just growling viciously at him got my point across to him. As we walked down the road westward Link struck some conversation, a habit he developed recently. When he did this he gave me the story of his life, his home, his friends and family, all of it in full detail. I listened intently to what he had to say and could picture it all in my mind as he spoke. His home world sounded absolutely beautiful, and his friends and family sounded like they were some really nice people. It made me wish I could go with him when he was able to go back home, but I knew very well that would be too dangerous for me to go with him. I frowned subtly at the thought of actually having to say goodbye to him. We've only known each other for a few days but within those few days we had become best friends. Literally. We could tell each other anything with no shame. It was like we really did connect with one another. Of course we had the occasional little fight every once in a while, but we always ended up laughing about it later because we would forget what we were even arguing over in the first place. Link was an amazing friend and I knew it was gonna hurt like hell when we would have to say goodbye to each other for good. The very thought made me want to cry, but as much as I wanted to I couldn't cry. I had to focus on getting Link to the safe zone safe and sound.
"Hey look over there! I see a big house up ahead to the left of the road." Link pointed to a plantation house up the road a ways. The house it self from the outside looked like it was in decent condition and from what I could see, hear, and smell there weren't any infected around the general area of it at all. I looked to the sky and saw the sun was sinking down westward. Link and I hurried to the house and made our way inside quickly and thoroughly checking the entire house for any supplies and infected. There were tons of supplies and even running hot water!! Zero infected. I breathed a sigh of relief after finding no infected anywhere. Then started jumping around excitedly because the house had running water and hot water. Much like peace and quiet running water plus hot water are freaking godsends!! Link found a couple of bedrooms and then scavenged through the kitchen. You would think he'd be excited about running water and hot water like me, but nope. While he went through what food there was in the kitchen I went to the bedrooms and dug around in the dressers and closets for clothes. I found some jeans that would fit me along with a new hoodie with long sleeves. The jeans were black denim and the hoodie was gray with dark gray stripes. It was a zip up hoodie too. I ran down the stairs to where Link was and showed him the clothes I found. He smiled at me and moved aside to show me that he was getting ready to cook something. I signed to him that I was gonna take a shower and that he should too when I'm finished. He nodded and went back to what he was doing previously. I headed back up stairs and made my way to the bathroom. I stopped by the closet right next to the bathroom and grabbed a couple of towels before heading into the bathroom and closing the door behind me. I ridded myself of my nasty old clothes and shoes and turned on the shower. I left my new clothes and my towels on the counter by the sink and stepped into the steaming hot water. The hot water felt absolutely wonderful and I used what shampoo, conditioner, and body wash that was there. I washed my hair and scrubbed my scalp with the shampoo six times before I was satisfied that they were fully cleaned. Then I used some conditioner in my hair and while it sat I used the scrubber and body wash to scrub my body down until I was satisfied. The entire time I was in the shower... I cried. I bawled my eyes out for the first time since the infection. I could just barely admit to myself, but I knew it was true. It was the whole reason why I didn't want to say goodbye to Link when he was able to go back to his own home world.
