(IM SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK OMG. I feel like there are a lot of stories that go on about how fun and happy love is, but a lot of people forget just how dangerous it can be too. This will be a dark story, and if you are not comfortable with the warnings described in the description, don't read. If not, then enjoy!)
Air escaped my lungs in quick, rapid bursts of breath. My chest felt as if it were caving in. I couldn't do this for much longer.
Luke, in all his beautiful glory, sprinted beside me. His fingers were clasped around my arm tight enough to be considered handcuffs. Sweat trickled down the back of his pale neck and his blonde hair, usually deliciously messy, was now windswept in a panicked disarray.
The midnight-chilled pavement slapped against our feet mercilessly, wearing and tearing apart our old worn out sneakers. Sirens echoed in the distance, closer and closer.
Tears prickled the corners of my eyes, "Luke!"
He didn't look back at me. Only faced forward with an expression of grave determination. His hand gripped my arm even tighter, most likely drawing blood at this point. My voice was scratchy and words came out in incomprehensible pants as I tried to get my boyfriend's attention.
The harder and farther we ran, the more strength and will I began to lose. My legs were as weak and wobbly as a newborn deer's. I couldn't keep going. My pace slackened considerably, causing Luke, much to his dismay, to go slower as well since he was holding onto me.
"I can't, Luke. I can't," I fell to my knees, effectively ripping Luke's hand off my arm. My lungs heaved, unable to catch a decent breath as the gravity of our situation began to bear down on me.
"What the fuck are you doing?" Luke snarled at me, advancing towards me as I uselessly tried to crawl out of his reach. "Get up, Bella. Right now!"
I shook my head feebly, weeping softly. Now that I was down, there was no possible way I could think of getting back up and running again. I was done. We were done.
Luke took his angry eyes off me for a moment to look behind us. The flashing of blue and red lights became more and more visible as the police closed the distance between our freedom and life in prison.
Though Luke tried to remain calm and collected, I knew he was internally panicking. He gazed back down at me, his once loving blue eyes turning dull and soulless. He usually got this look right before he was about to hurt me, whether it be physically or emotionally.
I cried harder.
"We don't have time for this, Bella," Hooking his hands beneath my armpits, Luke ungracefully yanked me to my feet.
"No, no, no," I shook my head vigorously as my weeps turned into full out sobs. Luke tried to speak over me and comfort me but I was too far gone in the state of terror.
"Bel-"
"No!" I screamed, shoving at his firm chest and trying to get away from him. It was over. All the running, the fighting, the stealing, the drug-abuse, everything..it was all over.
We were going to get locked up and I would spend the rest of my days confined to an iron-barred cage, lost in thoughts of the blonde-haired, blue-eyed devil who dragged me through hell and back. Who destroyed my life, my relationship with my family, and everything I worked for. Who destroyed me.
Who I loved more than anyone else in the entire world.
Luke crushed his cold mouth against my blubbering lips, silencing me in one of the many ways he knew how. He sucked the air out of my fragile lungs and breathed it all back in, making the world melt away like he always did. I would never leave him.
Several bullets cracked out in the distance and whizzed passed our bodies, sinking into the street sign just above our heads. These cops weren't fucking around this time.
"Listen to me, baby," Luke whispered, stroking his rough thumb across my tear-stained cheek. He paid no mind to our inevitable doom only meters away. "We have to run now, okay? We have to go. Can you do that for me?"
More guns went off. Sirens blared. People screamed and yelled.
I leaned in for another kiss, savoring the feel of his sweet mouth against mine. I loved him.
"Yes."
Luke smiled at me, that devilish kind of his that made me weak at the knees and willing to do anything for him. He twined our fingers together once more, condemning me to him with that iron grip of his. With renewed determination in my heart, we took off sprinting again with the wind at our faces and bullets at our back.
Us against the world. The way he promised it would always be.
