Chapter 5: Preliminaries

"Gather round!" Hyuga yells as he hands out the preliminary inter-high matches.

"This is for the preliminary inter-high matches, this is where it starts..." Hyuga trails off as he explains, and everyone looks at the piece of paper.

"The preliminaries of the inter-high are beginning soon! We were only one step from reaching it last year, we'll go this year... There are a lot of strong schools in this district and especially, the biggest and strongest opponent in this district, Shūtoku High. They were in the best 8 last year... on top of that, just like Kaijō, they have recruited a player from the Generation of Miracles. If we can't defeat that super-strong school, we won't get a ticket to the Nationals!" Hyuga explains carefully and slowly, making sure that everyone understood the circumstances.

"Kuroko... You know what kind of guy he is right?" Kagami glances at the shorter boy.

"Ah, that reminds me, Taro kun went to that school!" Hikari announces loudly making the rest stare at her.

"Taro kun?" a confused Kagami asks

"Hikari san means Midorima kun. Just like Kise kun said in the beginning, the other four are on a different level. If he has improved even more since then, I cannot imagine his level right now." Kuroko explains, earning gulps from the first years as well as a few senpais.

"To challenge Shūtoku, we have to win the first match! Let's go!" Hyuga cheers.

"Speaking of which, where's the coach?" Furihata asks

"It seems that our opponent for our first match is having a training match nearby, so she went to check," Hyuga replies.

"Well, last year our senpais made it so it won't be a problem. Also we have Kuroko, Kagami and Hikari. We'll win this year!" the two first years spoke between themselves.

 "Idiots!" Hyuga shouts while hitting their heads.

While talking among themselves, the gym doors open and close, Riko enters with a heavy sigh and with a frown on her face. She hands her handphone to Hyuga to show him the picture of the player who will be troublesome and after a series of sequels and "awwws" after seeing a picture of a cat instead, she waves and says 'Next'.

"His name is Papa Mbaye Siki, height 200 cm, weight 87 kg, an exchange student from Senegal, his arms and legs are long, to sum up in one word, he's 'tall'!  This team will be completely different." Riko explains with a serious voice earning silence from the team except for Kagami, Kuroko and Hikari.

"He's tall, and so?" Kagami asks.

"We had a taller teammate than him..." Hikari and Kuroko announce.

"Kagami kun and Kuroko kun will have special training menu starting tomorrow. The matches start on May 18! I won't let you have the time to whine!" Riko shouts earning a cheer.

Every single day, Hikari will observe the team and create a training menu, even helping to add more to Riko senpai's training menus every time practice ends, Hikari will give Riko notes on every member's weaknesses and strengths and things to improve on. 

When the day arrived, Riko received a text from Hikari while waiting for everyone to gather.

I'll be late today, so I won't be able to see the first quarter of the game. Gomen! I have to go for my regular check-up. See you later!
