"What do you mean? You know who Jacob is," Grace said, completely confused. "Your boyfriend?"
"I don't have a boyfriend, where's my husband?" Connie asked, looking around frantically. "Why are you here? Where's Michael?"
"Michael?" Grace almost broke down into tears once more. "Michael Beauchamp?" It was then that Jacob walked in. He was so happy to see that Connie was awake, and rushed over to her, but Grace stood up and stopped him halfway.
"What's wrong Gracie?" Jacob asked, hugging Grace.
"She doesn't know who you are. She doesn't recognise us, and she's asking for Michael."
"Who's Michael?" Jacob asked, looking across at Connie.
"Her first husband, before dad." Jacob looked up at Connie, but she couldn't see him. He took Grace and leant his head around the door of the room, and called Zoe in. Charlie accompanied her, and Jacob explained the situation. Zoe looked across at Charlie, and they both walked over to Connie. Being a doctor, of course Jacob knew that memory loss was a possibility, but he refused to accept it just yet.
"Erm, Mrs Beauchamp?" Zoe was stood by Connie with her pad and paper, and Jacob was stood with Grace at the foot of the bed.
"Yes?"
"We've got a few routine questions we'd like to ask you."
"Oh, please, I know how it works. I'm the Clinical Lead of Cardiothoracic Surgery for goodness sakes, not a random from the street." Charlie and Zoe looked across at each other, as they both had strong feelings about what was due to happen. Connie hadn't been the lead of Cardiothoracic Surgery since she had been working upstairs in Holby - when she had been married to Michael.
"Right, Mrs Beauchamp. First off, do you know where you are?" Connie answered the first five questions or so with ease - she was fully aware that she was in a hospital, she knew her full name, she knew her birthday. and she knew whereabouts she lived(she wasn't asked for an exact address). However, as the questions progressed, Connie's diagnosis became more and more clear.
"And can you remember how you got here?" Zoe asked.
"I was, no, I was in a, oh. No sorry, I can't remember." That left Connie puzzled, and she thought about how she got here but she had no idea.
"Can you tell me the date today?"
"Errm, is it the fourth, or the third, of March?"
"And in what year?"
"2004." Connie seemed confident with that answer, so was confused as to why the two people at the end of her bed looked shocked to hear it. Zoe wrote down Connie's responses, and Jacob and Grace just had to watch. He knew that they should probably leave, and he was kicking himself for being so selfish, but he couldn't force himself to turn away.
"And what was the most recent memory you have before you woke up today?"
"Well, I was with Michael, and I performed heart surgery on an elderly woman before he took me home. He has a lot of problems going on at the moment with the board - he's the chairman. Where is Michael anyway? I thought he'd be here by now."
It was then that Charlie stepped in, and placed his hand on Connie's shoulder.
"Connie, he's not coming. Michael isn't your husband anymore. You got divorced after he tried scamming you out of a job, remember?" Connie shook her head. "It's not 2004 either - it's the 17th of May, and it's 2016. I'm so sorry Connie." She couldn't formulate a response, and it killed Charlie looking at her confused expression.
