It was Wednesday morning, and Jane was once again walking into her mythology class. Spencer was sitting in the same place as last time, in the last seat in the last row. Jane took the seat next to him, and gave him a friendly smile. Spencer's lips curled into an almost smile, and then he actually spoke to Jane, "I'm sorry." Was all he said.
"For what?" Jane asked kindly.
"For not talking to you more the other day." He whispered. "I guess I just got freaked you. I thought I was the only one like me."
"There are more of us too, I can tell you so much if you will tell me more about yourself."
"Okay." Spencer agreed. "But I don't want to talk where others can hear us."
"I Know a place where no one ever goes." Jane told him. "But we have to go at night."
"Night works for me." He smiled shyly. "I'll meet you out front of the library at midnight."
"Sounds like a plan, but bring a flash light." She replied.
The professor came in then, and started the class before Spencer could say anything else.
Now that she was paying attention, Jane found the class really interesting. According to the syllabus, they would be spending a week or two learning about the myths from a culture, how it came about, how it effected the life's of the people, and so on, then moving on to another culture. This being the first week of class, they were starting with an easy on, Greek myths. The last couple of weeks would be spent on modern myths in American culture.
Jane thought that anything about vampires would come latter in the class, but she was proven wrong when the professor told a story about one of Zeus's many affairs, This one with a queen named Lamia. When Zeus's wife found out about the affair, she punished Lamia by killing all her children. Out of grief over loosing her children, Lamia became a half-human half-snake monster that sucked the blood of young children, possibly making her the first vampire. Jane wondered if there was any truth to this; Could Lamia be the ancestor of the modern vampire? Or was she, as the professor claimed, just a story desperate mothers used to scare there misbehaving children? Jane made a note to herself to ask Eli about it, he would have been a child himself when the myth became popular, so he should know.
When class was over, Jane and Spencer left together. They may have practically been strangers, but there shared status as non-human and a human word made them easy friends.
"When's your next class?" Spencer asked as they walked out side.
"Eleven fifteen, so I have half an hour." She told him. "Whens yours?"
"Not until three. I'll walk you to your class, if you don't mind me hanging around with you."
"I don't mind, I'd like it if you'd walk with me." She assured him. "I have a math class next, so it's in the science complex." They walked across the campus in a comfortable silence, and when they got to Jane's class room Spencer seemed reluctant to leave. He ended up staying until it was time for class to start, and slipped out of the room as the teacher came in. Jane wondered if his sudden attachment was because they had something in common, or because he had not made many other friends here. She had a feeling it was a little of both.

That night, a little before midnight, Jane made her way to the front entrance of the library. Spencer was already there, leaning on the side of the building and fidgeting.
"I was worried you weren't coming." Was his greeting to Jane.
"Of course I came, and I'm early so you can stop freaking out." They started walking to the far end of campus, with Jane leading the way. When they reached the farthest building, Jane kept on going, leading them off the main path and onto the grass. They were soon off campus, and found themselves at an elementary school. There was no light as they looped around to the back, and Spencer clicked on his flash light. After a minuet, the came to a large clearing with a jungle gym in the center, and a swing set in the far corner. Jane went to the swings and sat down, Spencer fallowed her lead.
"So," Jane started, "Why don't you tell me about how you changed."
"I guess my story starts my senor of high school when this guy, Jackson, starts hanging around with me. He had graduated when I was a freshman, so I thought it was weird that he now liked me, but he was a cool guy so I didn't really mind. He was like the older brother I never had and the dad I had lost all rolled into one."
"My parents died when I was young, so I was raised by my grandma. She was a practising witch, and always said that she didn't trust Jackson. He has in evil spirit or something, she would always tell me. I didn't listen, I never listened to her."
"One day, just after my graduation, Jackson and I are in my living room playing video games. Then out of nowhere he pauses the game and starts saying how he has to talk to me about something serious. I'm confused at first, I don't have any idea what he could want to talk about. He starts telling me that he is a vampire, so I think he is just making some dumb joke. I make a comment about how we're not fourteen year old girls, and he gets pissed. He starts screaming about how I need to take this seriously, and I think he is going to punch me."
"When he calms down, he shows me his fangs and starts telling me about how he has been testing me, and he wants me to join him as a vampire. He is making an army of us to help him take over the world or something. He promised me that I would have everything I could ever want if I join him. I can have money, and girls, and respect, and anything I can imagine, if I become a vampire and join his cause."
"It seems so stupid now, but I was scared and his offer sounded so good. I said yes. The moment I said it, he bit into my wrist. My whole body burned so bad. I just lay there on my living room floor, burning and screaming. It was the worst pain ever." Jane knew exactly what he was talking about, and even after three years she could still feel the pain when he described it.
"I don't know why, but he left right after biting me. Maybe he got hungry from tasting my blood, or he just didn't like to see the worst of a person changing, but he just left me there. Isn't that cruel?" Jane just nodded, she was to intrigued by his story to want to say anything.
"My grandma found me then. Probably all my screaming alerted her that something was wrong. She didn't freak out like I would have expected her too, instead she started doing some of her magic stuff. I had always thought it was weird that she was a witch, and had even made fun of her at times, but now I was so glad that she know what to do to save me."
"I don't know exactly what she did, but before to long the burning had stopped. I felt kind of normal when Jackson came back. His anger now was nothing compared to what it had been earlier. I thought he would take it out on me, but instead he attacked my grandma. I tried to fight him off her, but he was a lot stronger than me. I was able to injure him, but not before he drank enough of Gradma's blood to kill her. I must of hurt him badly because he fleed, but not before warning me that he would be back for me."
"At first, I didn't notice that anything was different about me. I didn't feel hungry, but I thought that was because I was upset about losing my grandma. I was staying with an aunt and uncle than, and they thought the same thing. After a while, I noticed that I was craving blood, and when I started going out side again I would get really bad sunburns. I thought for sure that he had changed me completely, and it would only be a mater of time before I started killing people."
"I had already been accepted into this school, so I came anyway. I guess it was my way of running, like, if I could get away from where everything happened then maybe it didn't really happen at all. But I still thought of myself as a monster, until I met you and you told me we wern't. I'm not sure I believe you yet, but now I have some hope."
Jane was shocked, she had known he would have a sad story, be she had not expected it to be that sad. "I'm so sorry." Was all she was able to say.
"You're not the one I want to be sorry." He said, and started to cry. All Jane could do was cry along with him.
