Chapter 6: Lost And Found
I panicked. Had I taken it out? I turned over my butterfly chair, searched the inside of my desk, unmade my bed, looked through dresser draws, looked through my pockets. I even checked in my Converse, and completely trashed my room. I couldn’t find it anywhere. Where was it? I flung open the door, and ran out.
I searched the kitchen, knocking over a bar stool. I searched through the cabinets. Nothing. I checked the fridge, I was being safe, checking everywhere. I checked stove, microwave. Still nothing.
I rush to the small utility room. I pick up the dirty clothes basket and look in all the pockets. When I still don’t find it, I dump the basket. I search through the washer and the drier. Absolutely. Nothing.
By this time I’m freaking out. Next I run into the living room. Turning over toss pillows. Throwing cushions across the room. Knocking over a lamp. Nicking the coffee table. Accidentally bumping the radio and my sister’s Cure CD starts playing. I hit it and it shuts off. Either broke it or some stroke of luck it just happened to turn off. I hope it was the second one, or I’m sure Riley would kill me over twice. I was fuming that I couldn’t find the ring.
“Dammit!” I scream. Another string of curse words spill out of my mouth. I trip over a cushion and fall. I pick myself up and try to calm down. I still need to check the bathroom. It comes up empty as well.
Then it hits me Riley could have taken it. Maybe she wanted to borrow it. Fine. That’s fine. She still has Dad’s wedding ring, maybe she’ll let me borrow that. I walk down the hall to her bedroom. I step in and she’s asleep. I walk out and close the door, sighing under my breath. I will not wake her up. She’s getting up early for a job interview as a security guard at the prison. If she’s well rested she’ll get it for sure. She has an impressive résumé, with a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice. I have to let her sleep. Food stamps can’t cover school clothes, water, and electricity.
Okay, okay… I’ll wait until morning. That’s fine. She has the ring. Of course she does. Why wouldn’t she? No one would steal it. I didn’t miss place is, nor lose it. That’s rational. I reassure myself several more times.
I clean up the mess I made so Riley doesn’t have reason to think I went on a psychotic rampage. After the living rooms cleaned I put the clothes back in the dryer and start a new load.
I walk into the kitchen to make some hot chocolate even though it’s summer. After it’s done I pop a bag of popcorn, and head into the living room. I crank the air conditioner to the highest setting, pop in the movie Grown Ups in our smallish TV and settle on the couch with a cozy, furry blanket.
Tinker sets down by my legs, and starts licking her paws carelessly. Who knows, maybe the dang cat ate my ring. I eye her and i swear she cocks an eye brow at me as if to say "why on earth would i swallow a ring? ew". I chuckle at my funny cat and watch the previews.

After the movies over I throw away my popcorn bag and dump my mug in the sink. I shut off the lights in all the rooms and turn off the-so-cold-it-could-snow air conditioner.
I head to Riley’s room to tell her goodnight just so in the morning I can tell her I did. In the hall way, I stop. For some reason the coat rack caught my eye.
An unrecognizable coat rests on it. It’s a males coat, large. It's hunter green and the interioris a dark orange and red plaid, and the neck is rimmed by grey wool. I figure it’s Riders. He must have left it here.
I step forward. I just stare at it for a few moments. My arm reaches into the left pocket with out me realizing it. It searches through the large pocket a while. It finds a small circular shape with three rock hard bumps on one side. I wonder what it is at first. Then my hand pulls out a white gold band with a large ruby framed by two diamonds.
