Jane led me to a large dining hall it was filled to the brim with 16 year olds waiting for instruction. "The administrator will be out shortly to give you all the ground rules and then you will be shown to your quarters." I thank her and she walks off the meet the next arrival.
"I see you've met my sister." A man with an Irish accent says to me.
"She's your sister?" I ask.
"Yeah. She was recruited two years ago and has been kissing butts ever since to get to a higher position." He scoffs. "I don't understand why. It's not like you get anything better in the high ranks. It's just easier to tell if you mess up."
I smile at him and stick out my hand. "Mark Fischbach."
He shakes it and smiles back. "Sean W. McLaughlin. But you can call me Jack."
"So Jack, you a new recruit?"
"Wouldn't be here if I weren't. So your folks send you off or...?"
"I chose too." I cut him off.
"Why?" He raises an eyebrow.
I shrugged. "Better then being back home." I had decided that if anyone asked, I was here by choice. My father couldn't be blamed for something he really didn't have a choice in. "You?"
"Parents." He says coolly. "They've been pumping out kids and sending them here long before me. I'm the last of the clan. At least I am at the moment."
I chuckle. We turn as a mans voice comes over the loud speaker asking for our attention.
"Welcome recruits!" He says with a big plastic grin. "Today will be the orientation for your training with us. Rules include, lights out at 10 pm, orders from superiors must be followed, and (sorry to say) no sexual and/or romantic relationships while in training. As soon as training ends you can screw each other to your hearts content but as for now, we need focus." The crowd laughed a bit at that one. "So, shall we show you your quarters?" He lead us to a long corridor with at least twenty doors on either side. "Rooming will be assigned at the end of the tour but these will be your homes for the entirety of your training. Rooms include four beds, a full bath, and a small living space. Meals will be eaten in the dining hall with all other recruits."
"Sir?" A short girl with purple highlights called. "You keep talking about our training but we don't even know what we're training for." We all nod in agreement and the man smiled.
"You'll find out soon enough young lady." She scoffed at the pet name but he just continued on. "This is your gym. You will be learning hand to hand combat here as well as working your physical bodies to maximum health." Jack groans beside me and I chuckle. We walk through the room that looked like an average gym with big mats in the center of it. "As you can probably tell because you are currently walking and not floating, we have created an artificial gravity force at the center of the station. Hence the spheroid shape. We are currently on level one, which is near the central diameter. Basement below and higher living spaces above. Once you have made it through your training, you will be moved either to a higher level or an entirely different station." We move into a holographic room that was covered from floor to ceiling in pixilated walls. "This is the simulation chamber. Here is where you will learn to fire weapons and fight using other long and short range weapons. We don't want anyone using those on each other." We laugh nervously and he claps his hands together. "That is all we'll be showing you today. If you go back to the first hall, you will find your names written on the pad on the door. Only those with your or your roommates hand prints may open these doors so don't worry about anyone getting into your stuff." He winked and a few people laughed. We haven't brought any 'stuff'. Most of us didn't own any 'stuff'. We just ignored the comment and started back towards the hall. We reach it and Jack and I start to skim through the names on the doors.
