Here we go. Demi thought. Her reflection stared back at her from the full body mirror. This is going to be one hell of a first day. The girl with black hair and olive skin in the mirror looked confident, but on the inside she was absolutely terrified. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays were the days the students had to wear the posh little grey and yellow uniforms. The shirt was a white button-down that was supposed to be tucked into the short yellow and grey plaid skirt, but Demi left it out.
The heels they wore they were allowed to choose themselves, but they had to be black - four inch heel or shorter. So she had pulled out the only pair of black heels she had and slid her feet into them, hoping she didn't look too much like a scholarship kid.
"Wow." Her brother smiled. "That's the girls uniform?" He tossed his head back and laughed.
"Shut up!" She punched him in the shoulder.
"No punching your brother, he doesn't need to start off his senior year with a black eye!" Their mother yelled up.
"She couldn't get her hand on my face if she tried." he muttered, still smiling at her.
"You bet I could you weak little -"
"Hey! Easy, you two!" Dad came into the kitchen and pushed both of them their plates of eggs and bacon.
"I didn't think it looked that bad." She said through the mouthful of toast. Her mom shot her a look and she swallowed. "Sorry."
"You look fine, sweetie." Aiden mocked their mother's voice and reached out, messing up the hair she'd spent half an hour on.
"Stop it!" She smacked his arm down as hard as she could, and he jerked it back, wincing.
"Jeeze, sis. Lay off the coffee for a bit, yeah?"
"Shut up." She took another gulp to hide her smile.
"Hurry up, guys. You definitely don't want to be late on your first day." Dad walked out of the room. "I'll see you at dinner!" He called over his shoulder.
"I'm driving." Aiden snatched the keys off the counter and held them up in the air so she couldn't reach them.
"Jerk." She followed him out to the car all the same without making a fuss. She punched the name of the school into the old and half-broken GPS and looked out the window at the posh neighborhood. There were estates all over the place, and the further out you got, the bigger the houses.
It took fifteen minutes of driving before they could see the school property line. It was so easy to see because of the wrought iron gate that spread into a fence around the whole school. They stopped at the front gate and a guard came over and looked in the window. Aiden rolled it down.
"Names and years?" The guard was a bigger man, whose voice was just a bit too high for his size.
"Aiden and Demi Rivera. It's our first day." He said up at the balding guard. "I'm a senior, she's a junior."
"Go ahead in." He waved a hand at the box like office on the other side of the gate and they watched, slightly in awe as it swung open.
So the grass really is greener on the other side, Demi thought to herself. She rolled down the passenger window and looked around the very well-kept lawn of the exclusive A-list high school. There were hedges surrounding a small courtyard to their left, which was paver in cobblestones like the rest of the outdoor paved spaces, as well as parking lots. The building, however, was an attraction all to itself. There were floor to ceiling windows on the two wings visible from the front, and the brickwork on the building was infallible.
