Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!

My alarm went off again, for the third time. "Shut up you stupid clock. It's the first day of summer..."

I rolled out of my bed onto the floor, into the soft inch-thick carpet in his room. I got up slowly and walked out of my room and down the stairs to the kitchen. He could smell bacon. Bacon...

I sat down at the counter. "Morning, mom." "Morning, Alex. Happy birthday!" She brought me a plate full of bacon, eggs, and toast. "Hope you like it! Your cake is in the oven."

"Thanks, mom." I grabbed the fork and shoveled the food into my mouth. I looked over and saw my golden retriever, buddy, beg for food. I snuck him a small piece of bacon. "Our secret, ok buddy?" I whispered. The dog gave a low bark as he gobbled up the fried deliciousness and went back to his bed.

I rubbed my eyes, still not fully awake. Mom chuckled. "Still sleepy, huh, sport? Let me take that empty plate for you." Her phone started buzzing on the counter. "Excuse me, honey."

I got up and walked upstairs to the bathroom. After doing my daily routine, I looked in the mirror, my tousled dark brown hair almost covering light brown eyes, and a small layer of stubble covering a strong jawline. 'Geez, I need to shave,' I thought to myself. I combed my hair straight back. 'I look just like dad used to.' The thought of dad makes me a little sad, like it always does. I pushed the thought away.

I went back downstairs, fresh. I heard a rapid knock on the door. "Just a minute!" I opened the door, and saw a disheveled, muscular guy, with crazy curly hair and a glint in his eye.

"Luke, come on in." "Thanks bro."
Luke walked in a bit jittery. 'Must have been up all night again. He's so hopped up on red bull it's ridiculous!"
"Hey, like, want some coffee to ground you?"

"What? No. We just need to go now. Now now now. Happy birthday by the way." His mouth was running a mile a minute. "We gotta go to the field! The guys are waiting! Wouldn't wanna keep then waiting would you? Let's go go go!" He dashed out the door to his dirtbike.

"Be home for dinner, Alex. The cake should be ready by then. I've got a surprise for you too!" I barely heard her. "Ok mom, I'll be home by five. Love you." I rushed to the garage where I grabbed my dirtbike and raced Luke to the field.

As we were leaving, I noticed a dark car driving around the neighborhood. 'Must just be visitors or something.' I raced Luke to the field, without a second thought to the black car...
