"You are so socially inept!"
My sister's words rang over and over again in my head as I watched her storm away, her hands clenched tightly into fists and her feet stomping on the ground. My chest suddenly felt heavy as I watched her go, like my heart had been replaced with a trillion-ton weight.
"Socially inept," I mumbled. "What a load of crap. What does that even mean, anyway?"
I didn't know what the word meant, but I could guess.
And it didn't sound good.
I turned away, marching back to my lunch table and plopping back down. My lunch was barely even half-eaten, but my appetite was long-gone. I didn't want to eat, not anymore.
"Yo, Phil!" Dil called to me from across the table, grinning from ear to ear. "I just gave Chuckie's armpit a wiff, and it smelled just like rotten tomatoes! I'm gonna try Tommy next!"
Tommie laughed, while Chuckie's face grew redder than his messy hair.
"That's great, guys," I mumbled, staring down at the floor.
Lil's words echoed in my mind. Her eyes, blazing with fury, were etched into my brain. Her voice, heavy with anger, refused to leave me alone.
"You are so socially inept!"
I sighed, slumping down in my chair and burying my face in my hands.
I can't be that annoying, can I? I mean...I thought Lil loved to play Sniff My Pits. It was her favorite game; we'd played it all the time together. But lately she's been acting so...distant. She doesn't hang out with me as much. She gets mad at me all the time.
I jumped as the bell rang, signaling that lunchtime was over. I sat up, gathering my leftovers together and standing up.
"Phil?" Tommy asked, raising a brow. "You okay, man?"
On either side of him, Dil and Chuckie looked at me with concern evident in their eyes. But I could barely acknowledge what they were saying. The only thing I could think about was my sister's stinging remark as I turned and walked off without a word. Thoughts swirled inside my head faster than Dil could detect the smell of my armpit.
What did I do to upset Lil? Can I fix it?
Or is it already too late?
