I was sitting on the end of the wood bench at my regular lunch table. I sat in this very spot everyday, alongside my two best friends that I've had since elementary; Olivia and Destiny. This was our Junior year of High School, and it was already half way over.
"Did you guys hear about that Theater Summer School for students who will be Seniors next year?" Destiny asked as her and Olivia joined me at the end of our table. The subject she had just brought up was perfect for us because we all had acting as a common passion; in which we all shared the same drama class, and had since Sophomore year.
"No, what is it?" Olivia asked, excited for the answer Destiny would be sharing with us.
"It's a school that teaches you acting skills during the summer. You stay in a dorm and have only theater related classes. I hear they even put on a play that all the students participate in for the end of summer." A smile appeared on my face as soon as she started describing the summer school. It sounded like the perfect last summer for not only me, but the girls too. If my mom would allow me to go, that is.
My mom always had this "special" summer planned out for me. In other words, she sent me away to some place I didn't necessarily enjoy while she was away on business. Usually it was to some relative I had never met before, or some silly camp that I had no common interest with. I've never had a fun summer my whole life, and I've never been able to convince my mom to let me go someplace of my own choice for one summer.
That's when I realized the smile on my face from earlier immediately disappeared from this thought.
"I think I"m going to ask my parents if I can go to that this summer." Olivia speaks, and I almost didn't hear her since I was so deep in misery at the fact my mom probably wouldn't let me go. Without asking her, I knew her answer was already a dead seat 'no'.
"Me too!" Destiny starts, and then turns to in my direction. "Amaria, you should ask your mom too, even though she'll probably say no like she always does. It's worth a shot."
"Yeah, I don't know. I don't want to get my hopes up for nothing." I tell them, scooting my tray of food away, losing my appetite. For the most part, my mother and I got along just fine. It was when it came to summer that we argued.
A lot.
"I have an idea!" Olivia pipes up in her cheery voice. She was always a very happy person, and I wished I could be more like that. I was happy, but wasn't quite as bubbly as she was.
"Ooh! What is it?" Destiny questions her, and I look to her as well.
"What if we go over to your house after school, and first me and Destiny ask her if you can go. We can try and convince her." She starts out, looking at me when she says 'your house'. I look at Destiny who was smiling and nodding at the idea. "And then you can tell her how much you would love to go, and how it would improve your skills to reach your childhood dream." She finishes, seemingly to be out of breath.
"I think that's a fantastic idea!" Destiny agrees and they both turn to me. I knew this may have a bigger effect on my mom than when I just ask, but I still had loads of doubt in my mind from the countless times I've tried to convince her before.
"Yeah, but doesn't it probably cost money?" I ask, trying to hint that it's going to take more work than just getting my mom to say yes.
"Yeah, but we can help you pay to go!" Destiny says. "I've been getting a lot more allowance from doing extra chores, and I've been saving up for almost a full year." Olivia nods in agreement with the idea of helping me.
"We really want you to go with us. It would be the best to spend at least one summer with you before we all have to go adult." Olivia adds.
I sigh, knowing that they were coming to my house after school whether I said yes or no.
"Fine, we can go to my house after school, and try to convince my stubborn mother."
"Yay!" They both cheer.
"But-" They both turn to me. "Please don't get your hopes up too high. I don't want you guys to be as disappointed as I feel every summer."
.................................................
And that's how it started.
For some reason, my friends were way more convincing than I ever could be, and my mom surprisingly said yes. IF I could find a way to pay for it myself.
Destiny's parents said they would help out, so I ended up going to her house almost every day after school to help her mom out with some gardening work. In return, they would pay my fee for summer school.
Before I knew it, I had paid the School and got a letter stating I would receive my schedule when I arrived on campus.
After reading that letter, I knew it was going to be a good summer.
A/N Hey guys! Thanks for checking out my book :) It really means a lot. I'm not the best writer, but bare with me! I hope you enjoy it :)
