In addition to protecting you from sword, arrow, and contact attacks damage, armor will protect you from falling anvils, cacti, chicken eggs, explosions, fire, fireballs from blazes or ghasts, fire charges and lava.
Without enchantments, armor does not protect you from other types of damage, like drowning or suffocating, falling, continued fire exposure, the Void, or Potions. However,enchantments can add those protections.
