Beacons are blocks that give out light, like glowstone. If you activate them on a special pyramid, they emit columns of light into the sky and can give you special powers or status effects.
They are one of the rarest Minecraft blocks, because you need a Nether star to build one. And to get one you have to kill a Wither.
