NICK

I wake up to the sound of my phone buzzing, the caller is unknown, I pick up instinctively.

"Hello?" i ask phone shaking in my hand

"Nick. It's Cynthia."

"CYNTHIA! Oh my gosh! Where are you!? I haven't talked to you in forever!" I say siting up quickly and turning on the light next to my bed.

"Nick, i'm in Portland." she says

"Are you okay?" i ask "Why would you be there?"

"I'm in Portland because I needed to get some new surroundings." she said "And yes, i'm okay. How have you been?"

"Um, i've been good. I went to a party last night and almost got beat up because of Adam punching some kid in the face, but it was still fun." i say chuckling "Why did you need new surroundings?"

"Oh my, that's Adam for you...um, i just wanted some new adventures and i needed some alone time, everyone at university was just getting annoying. Portland is so much cleaner than Chicago." she says there was some noise in the background, it sounded like a car honking and a police car siren.

Cynthia Evans, my older sister. She was enrolled in a Technical University because she loved math and working with metal and building stuff. Her freshman year in Chicago she made friends with a lot of people, but she would constantly call and complain that her room mate Brooke kept getting on her nerves, but after the fifth or so call she said Brooke had mysteriously stopped getting on her nerves and they had actually become great friends. Her sophomore year Brooke moved to a different college because of her family, and we never heard of her again. We had gone a whole six months without having any contact with my sister, but i guess that was over just now.

"Um yeah, do you want to talk to mom or dad?" i ask "We've all been worried about you since you last made contact with us..."

"NO! I mean, no Nick, i don't want mom or dad knowing i'm in Portland. They will just tell me to go back to Chicago and finish my last year. I'm here with Brooke actually." she says the last part quietly i almost couldn't hear it, Almost. I tense up at the mention of her name, i never liked her, i always thought that she was hiding something, but then again isn't everyone?

"Oh, goodie." I say sarcastically

"Oh please Nick, i've always at least tried to like all of your friends." she says "At least try to like her."

"Seriously Cynthia? When have you ever tried to e nice to Adam you always hated him, and he knows it." i say sassily "And she's always seemed a bit unstable from the way you told us, she dramatically just stopped being annoying to you and now you guys are traveling across America."

"We haven't been 'Traveling across America' dick. When i got here she was staying at the same hotel as me." she says mocking my voice

"Oh yeah, i totally believe you. whatever Cynthia." i say rolling my eyes "If you didn't wanna tell me why you really went to Portland fine, but at least tell me why you called me so freaking early."

"I called because i miss you." she says her voice quiet again "I really do miss you Nick, i haven't been the same since i moved away from you guys."
